Fast food workers don't deserve a penny over minimum wage

I don't think a lot of you have heard this little factoid before so i'm going to say it. Pay attention to this. Ready? : There is no person on the face of this earth who is too good to work at McDonalds. Why is it that so many people on this board, who have never worked a day in their lives, feel like they're entitled to a career at a white collar air conditioned office as a first job? I've seen fast food workers who work well over 60 hours per week at two different restaurants, because each restaurant won't pay them overtime. And then I see little kids who are spoiled rotten make some comment about their nationality or their English skills, or chew them out for giving them the wrong order. It makes me sick to my stomach. Don't get me wrong. It's terrific to get a college education and strive for bigger and better things, but you'll never ever be entitled to it unless you bust your ass for it. I bet a lot of you condescending people on here will end up working a fast food job as a young adult, and then you'll be in for a rude awakening.fidosim

Yeah, I had a job once but it sucked so I quit. See my parents were smart enough to go out and educate themselves and get high paying jobs so I haven't had to worry about working crap jobs or even work for that matter.

I was in the mood for a burger so I went to Wendy's. I get home, turn on the TV, ready to eat my nice burger from Wendy's and theirs a damn chicken sandwich inside. How damn dumb are these people? I say it perfectly clear so their little minds can comprehend me and they always get the order wrong. This is the third straight time I've gotten fast food where they've messed up. And it's not always the foreign people who don't speak English, the people who speak English there are just as dumb as the ones who don't. If there was some way to determine the percentage of people who got the wrong order at a fast food drive thru I swear it would be well over 60%. These people always mess up, their complete idiots who don't even deserve their $8.00 an hour.MM87

Uh...no. You're paid to do the job. Whether or not you're allowed to make mistakes depends on what those mistakes are, what the consequences of making those mistakes are, how often you make those mistakes, etc etc.

It depends on the job. If you're a structural engineer and the bridge that you just inspected and cleared as being sae collapses and kills 100 people due to your incompetence, yes, you should be fired. However, we're talking about ****ing BURGERS here.

You know that each order has to be made in a certain amount of time and that employees get marked down if they don't make the food in the time limit. I think for McDonalds if you mess up like that 10 times and your fired.

The time required for each burger was 30 seconds I believe. 1 minute for the full order. To think, you wonder why they rush your food and either mess it up/confuse it with another order?

Not to mention customers at fast food restaurants are complete jerks. They try to mentally break down the cashier just to get a discount or a free burger.

I work at Domino's Pizza myself and I have to make each pizza in approximately 90-120 seconds. The customers are such jerks there too, they'll even lie and damage their own food so they can call you up, complain, get a free pizza, and get you into deep crap.

dude i know what you mean. i was a shift manager at papa johns for a while. they seriously make the workers feel horrible. there was one guy who called in every week. and would ask for a pizza with triple chicken. we would seriously load this thing up with it. every single time. and send it out. and he would call up being like there is hardly any chicken on here. and get a free one. some lady complained that the dough under the cheese was not crispy. it was soggy. HOW IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE CRISPY UNDER THE CHEESE. SHOW ME THE PIZZA THAT IS LIKE THIS!

my parents are filthy rich. but guess what? i have 2 jobs. and both of them are horrible. i make 8/hr at one and 6.80/hr at the other. but by your reasoning. i chose not to apply myself and thats why i make horrible pay. yet your the one who has no job? i do apply myself. i work hard even though my jobs suck. yet im going to college to be an aerospace engineer. and after the first year i came out with a 3.39gpa. so dont give me that bull about not applying myself. you sir are a horrible person. and one day reality is gonna slap you in the face

Get a clue. I've worked fast food and other crappy, painful and meanial jobs in my short life. That doesn't mean I'm poor or have failed at school; my parents pay my university fees *blush*, and I got into a challenging course. It just so happens that my family enforces our own special rule called: "Heads out of Asses". You can be afluent AND humble you know.

Why would say that about millions of people just based on a few experiences at one place?

Most of the people working fast food are "in the process" of applying themselves, college costs money (way to much money, but thats a topic for another time) and "money doesn't grow on trees". The jobs you get to choose from that do not require a degree or any previous work experience are slim, trust me I know. I had to apply at over 21 places in order to get my first job as a cashier.

After you get that first job and a degree or two under your belt, then you can move up in the world.

TC is a jerk. Everyone else needs to calm down with this stuff though. The recent raise in the federal minimum wage greatly affected the fast food industry. The majority of fast food employees are school age children. The majority of school age children have a very low cost of living. It makes zero sense to put such a burden on the employers when you aren't helping the people that need it most.

Secondly, Fast Food is a cushy job. Guess what fellas! In ANY job you have, you're going to get yelled at if you do it wrong, or you don't do it fast enough, or if you have a bad attitude. The fast food employee isn't the new target of opression.

I think that the discussion up to this point is biased because the majority of the community is at an age where they or people they know are entering the work force and fast food is a common entry point.

Anyway, they deserve minimum wage because it's the law and they deserve to have the opportunity to make more because everyone should be able to excel. They shouldn't make mistakes, but you shouldn't get too upset when they do.

also I find that if you goto fast food resturaunts in towns with worse off education that it gets messed up more.

I know it sounds weird, but this is true. at least for me. I used to goto a burger king in the town i lived in for a while, which apparently had a lot of dumb people and had the worst high school (grade wise) in the area, and lo and behold the food was screwed up almost 60% of the time

but when I would goto my actual home town they dont really screw up. and its cleaner.

The Minimum Wage is an unbelievably STUPID idea in the first place. Take a look at how every time the government mandates a raise in the Minimum Wage, the lowest level employees (Typically High School Students and people with very low skill levels) lose their jobs at certain places, over and over and over again. Why? Simple economics: If you increase the amount you're FORCED to pay your workers, that cost of doing business will ultimately be passed on to the consumer in the form of cost of goods & services going up. Then, after you've increased costs and STILL can't maintain a stable profit margin, you lay off your workers of the lowest levels.

Minimum Wage is just another Big Bloated Government abortion like Social Security or Medicare. Big Brother just has to keep on holding our hands, doesn't he?:x

Its your fault for not checking your food once you got it. Ive never had a false order and i get fast food a lot. I bet you dont even have a job, and if you do well im sure you screwed up too.

I bet you have never even worked at a fast food restaraunt. It takes more than one person to mess up an order. Even if the person who takes your order gets it right it is very easy for the person in the back to make it wrong. There are more orders than just yours. You are not the only person in the world. On a daily basis from 10 am to 7 pm there are at least 10 orders on the board in the back. Yes it is easy to read them but it is also easy to make a mistake. Then you have to take the expeditor into account. For those of you who don't know large words like that because you have never worked in fast food, this is the person who bags the order and or hands it out. If the expeditor puts the wrong order in the bag because almost every item looks the same at these plaes then it is their fault. Then there is the manager. Sometimes there are some idiots who become managers and don't know how to manage their crew. So don't blame just one person. Also it take brains to use these stupid registers which are constantly making errors ont the board and they can't do anything to fix it because the owners have their heads where the son doesn't shine and they won't fix them. These registers rquire about 10 - 20 steps to create something as simple as a whopper or a big-mac. No it does not require special training to do this but it takes a lot of practice and patience.
