I was just watching Battlestar Galactica and was wondering when practical FTL like in the huge Ships we see in the movies will be possible.

All the theory is actually there; we just need to make the step in actually getting the vast amounts of power needed for it. And to all the skeptics out there, remember the PC was laughed at and considered impossible in it's very early stages.

So...when do you think (if at all) it will be possible?

I don't think it's possible, and even if it were, we'd be dead before we even have the technology to do FTL travel.

I will be dead before we invent the technology currenly it is beyond the scope of human understanding how something like this would work. Once we get smarter we may be able to do it but it will be MANY years.

Tesla invented some kind of light that travelled 57 times the speed of light like 60 or more yrs ago, I don't see why we couldnt do so in comin yrz

Wasn't that those photon things that gave the appearance they were travelling faster than light but was disproved?

In my future fiction (it's not done yet), it will be available around that time. By the year 3000 we should be able to take the whole universe.

I think it would be wrong to say it i impossible when the same thing has been said for many other things in the past that turned out possible - when is more the issue here.

I doubt it will be any time soon.

Don't think it's possible at all. Physics tells us that awhole bunch of wacky things happen when an object travels at the speed of light.. Such as your mass becoming infinite.

At first i thought FTL was impossible, however after reading up on it for a while, im not so sure. Theres a few theories going around about "Tachyons", a particle capable of going *only* faster than light, one that can not go slower than the speed of light. If they exsist, it is said at some point in the future they could be studied and used in some fashion to help assist a ship to go faster than light without being crushed into a black hole.

No solid proof yet, but the theory is out there. Hope that theory, along with all of String Theory, turn out to be true.

Our government stole the technology to transmit electrical power wirelessly back in the 1890's. Look up Nicola Tesla. How far do you think technology has really advanced over another hundred years? I mean c'mon, We have Darpa to investigate and sieze "dangerous technology".

I think anything's possible. Many great inventors and philosophers were laughed at when they told others of futuristic inventions, but now they're the most heavily used and relied on items of the day.

If I remember correctly, scientists who have tried to get an entity to the speed of light have failed. When the entity starts getting close to the speed of light, it just dissapears. It doesn't cease to exist, but we just don't know where it goes (kind of like in a black hole).

So I say, never.

Sci-fi had to use a way to speed up travel distances to other places so that their timelines arent super long, and their characters die every episode. So black hole travel and FTL Mahines were created. From a scientific standpoint, nothing observedhas ever surpassed the speed of light, and will not.

There's an amazing number of ill-informed posts in this thread, but I picked this one out for not only using the always-zany Tesla conspiracy theory, but for getting his name wrong. And TC, we absolutely do not have any indication of any way FTL could work. "Massive" power would not do it; accelerating to lightspeed would require literally *infinite* energy, as a singularity comes up in the relativistic formulae there.

In a blunt form, if I travelled to the moon faster than the speed of light what would be the point? because I wouldn't physically be there until the light reached it. And the speed of light is so fast whats the point in going 0.000000000000000000000000000000000001x faster than light.

I love how people like you are so quick to yell conspiracy theory just because you failed to educate yourself on the topic. Try reading a few history books before acting so ignorant. Tesla made a number of inventions that were swallowed up by the government. In the early 1900's he made repeated attempts to aquire patents for his technology, but was unable to do so due to "lack of corporate finance". Our government influenced financial organziations so he couldn't patent his most significant works. They didn't want other nations to have this technology, so they hoarded it. Our government and military have built experimental craft which travel at over 1200 MPH but carry no fuel.

Even if we could gain the infinite amount of energy possible for light speed travel,it'd still be pretty useless. If I have my facts straight (since it's been so long since I've read about this),the world and basically everything around you would age rapidly while you're in a space trip traveling in light speed.By the time you get back to Earth after a light speed joyride,it will have aged by hundreds or even thousand of years.Kind of counter-intuitive.Again,I'm not really sure if what I'm saying is accurate...

We will never pass the light speed threshhold. It is literally impossible, we would need infinite energy. But, we can get around it through things such as wormholes and such.

Apparently doing the Kessel run in 15 parsecs would take you dangerously close to a black hole and a ship would have to be going at an incredible speed to avoid its gravitiational pull.

Not if anti-matter or zero-point energy is used.

Well, it would still require a spectacular amount of energy, though either of those could provide it. Given that no natural supplies of anti-matter are known to exist in significant quantities anywhere in our galaxy, though, that means we'd have to create it, so we'd still have to expend the amount of energy (plus the loss due to thermodynamics) and store and accumulate it (a very difficult prospect, since you are always going to lose at least some over time due to quantum barrier tunneling) until we had enough to do something interesting. Zero point energy is definitely an exciting prospect, and I really hope someday we are able to do something with it. However, at this point, there are no viable mechanisms to do anything more involved than the Casimir effect with it. Hopefully, that will change in my lifetime :)
