Discrimination against anyone is unwise. However, there's nothing worse than somebody with a treatable medical condition that is unwilling to care for themselves.  In all fairness, some people who are obese have untreatable genetic disorders, so they should be left out of any discussion. Â
Being obese will significantly decrease your life expectancy and whether or not you have medical insurance, you'll become a burden upon everyone as you'll need prolonged medical care costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, which will raise everyone's insurance premiums.Â

I agree with this guy. It's like being able to have a shower but not being bothered to have one and stinking the place wherever you go and making it bad for others.
I'm a big guy, if someone calls me fat or insults me because they think I am then I just look at them like they are stupid. Hello, it's like No crap captain obvious, I know I am not skinny I have to look at myself in the mirror everyday:|double_deckerI jiggle my gut and laugh like Kenny Rogers. :)
But none of that stuff bothers me anymore. I couldn't care less what other people think about me. They don't live my life, and chances are I'll never see them again. So why let stupid people get to ya?
As to why overweight people get such a bad rep, I think it's because the problem is largely seen a one that's easy to fix, especially from the vantage point of individuals who have never had to deal with a serious weight problem.
You'll often hear, "Sheesh, just eat less and exercise more. It's as simple as that." Well, obviously it is not that simple or we wouldn't have the problem to begin with. We wouldn't have people in tears and ready to end their lives if it was just a matter of eating less and exercising more. There are many other factors to consider, especially for those individuals with addictions and maladaptive eating behaviors. The changing state of our grocery stores and the fast food boom doesn't help matters either, especially for low income families.
My daddy used to be ultra skinny...as in only 125lbs. Toothpick of a guy when he was a teenager, and in his early 20s. THEN he had deveoloped a disabling blood disease that is so rare they dont even have a name for it. They just know that it is LIKE Anti Flactoid Purpera...but it isnt that based on certain characteristics. Basically on a really bad day, he cant get out of bed and he gets sores out of no where and bleeds internally. Because of this disease, he now weighs (now i havent talked to him about this too lately but last time i knew) appx. 300lbs. This depresses him a lot, and depression in turn, makes him eat. His brothers and sisters make fun of his weight (except a select few...and he has a massive family..) and bring him down all the time, saying hes faking it, ect. This depresses him yet more which in turn makes him eat MORE. I love my daddy, and anyone who makes fun of him, I am all over like a rabbid weasle on crack. NO ONE should make fun of an overweight person, because THEY DONT KNOW what the reason for it could be. Could be health (and mental health too!), or they had a baby and its taking forever to lose the weight, or even just genetics! Some people need gastric bypass surgeries, which is scary and expensive too! xhellcatxWow.. I'm sorry. I hope he gets better.

Food can be addictive to a lot of the morbidly obese folks. And it IS a lot harder than just eating less and exercising more. How effective would stopping drinking be if you had to have a little drink every day? You can't just give up eating cold turkey... you have to eat to survive. So that temptation is always going to be there. I feel really bad for those people :(As to why overweight people get such a bad rep, I think it's because the problem is largely seen a one that's easy to fix, especially from the vantage point of individuals who have never had to deal with a serious weight problem.

Im fat, but Im also in shape. I scored around a 250/300 on my last APFT, which is a little over the company average of like 230's.I'm assuming you're in the military. That's a decent PFT, mine's usually around 275, but then again I'm pretty skinny. Sorry, but I think being morbidly obese and causing it yourself is disgusting. If you want to look like that, whatever, I just don't see the appeal.
So my question is that if I can run faster than you, run father than you, do more push-ups and sit-ups than you, why am I considered the lazy fatty fatty 2x4 can't fit through the kitchen door?

So true. My sister used to be the most athletic person I knew, honestly. She was always hiking, biking, running, lifting, kayaking, climbing, going on those outward bound trips, etc. Then at one point she started to mysteriously gain weight, as in fat, not muscle. It freaked her out so she worked out even harder.
The weight just kept piling on so she went to a few doctors, most of which suspected that poor eating habits were the cause of her weight gain. She was devastated, I mean she was really really ballooning up to the point that she was far past obese. And then of course she had to deal with the jerks on the street or at her office who would make fat comments. I know for a fact that on more than one occasion she considered suicide.
Fortunately this true story has a happy ending. My father eventually sent her to a specialist, who sent her across the country to another specialist, who finally sent her to a third specialist who diagnosed her with a rare, but treatable, thyroid disorder. With treatment and a few years behind her she's finally back down to her original weight. She still bares the scares of weight gain, but she's finally enjoying life again and happy to be alive.
If I could have caught someone calling my sister fat I would have gone right for the jugular. Worthless idiots, I swear.

Despite 9 years of football, years of lifting, and military PT, for some reason guys like me can only drop so much weight until we need a new eating plan and such because your body adapts to what you do to it. All kinds of skinny people eat way more than me, way worse foods than me, and never exercise yet they never gain a pound. I don't know why, but I do know that everything that makes you fat is what these people do and they just don't get fat.

Let's not ever make fun of anyone for anything.
Even jerks are often jerks through no fault of their own. Some of them have serious mental/emotional/psychological problems that are beyond their control. So next time you see someone being a jerk, you should just assume that it's not his fault.

Sometimes you gotta find foods that will help boost your metabolism, and in some extreme cases, it could be a thyroid problem...some people even have OVER-ACTIVE thyroids and they CANT GAIN weight. Oh yeah. It keeps me busy! I'm in charge of everything that goes on back there, plus I have to do the work too. Like unloading the trucks, moving pallettes, stocking... all that crap. I also have to make sure everyone else is doing their job. It's quite a handful but I love it!Bullies try and find the easiest person to pick on, whether they are skinny, shrimps, or fat pieces of lard. Bullies usually have low self-esteem themselves, and only do it to make themselves feel better (this is in regards to school, or even work related bullies). It is easy for someone to target a person who looks a certain way where it is easy to point out a fault, like I said above, if they are pudgy, or really skinny, and have an abnormal shape to their body. You just have to ignore it, and be the bigger person. It isn't right to make fun of fat people, but that is just our society, and it has been going on forever.videogamer456
I don't think too much "bullying" happens at the work place. I mean I'm sure there are cases... but by then everyone is usually mature enough to know better, don't have the time to make fun of someone else, and have better things to worry about. If anyone does give you hell, just go to your boss and they'll be dealt with.
because if someone's a different race or crippled or whatnot, they can't change that, whereas if you're fat, it's your own fault. I'm overweight, and I'm willing to admit that it's for no reason other than I eat a little more than I should, and I don't exercise as much as I should.
I am so happy your sister got things streightened out! xhellcatx
Thanks hellcat. I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you're having, especially the recent news from your doc. :( I hope your husband remains supportive. I would have given him a swift kick to groin had I been in your shoes.

Oh, you would be suprised how immature and obnoxious co-workers can be. I thought I heard you worked, actually, so I am suprised you haven't run into any annoying people. I have worked at a camp during the summer, and I had this really mean, nasty co-counselor, who liked to talk down to me, and treat me like I had no idea what I was doing. We came close to butting heads a few times, but luckily nothing happened. Even at my mom's work (she's a school social worker) her boss is a real moron, and witch, and she gives the most tedius, moronic tasks to her employees, and treats them like garbage. My mom's Union tried to get her fired, but it didn't work because she had tenure, and the ethics commity could not get her on any of the things she was brought up on.[QUOTE="xhellcatx"]I am so happy your sister got things streightened out! Schwah

Thanks, I'll be ok, whatever happens. If I lose the baby then it just wasnt meant to be. Probably for the best seeing as my financial situations not exactly stable, but still, I think I'll still give it a name. My husband almost lost me for the crap he has put me through. I was very ready to pack my bags and walk out the door, and I told him that. I told him I loved him so very much but couldnt take his poor treatment so he had better go to counceling and seek some help on how to treat his wife. Worked....then he got deployed. He still does wish I would lose weight though, and I understand where hes coming from, it just needs to be brought up in a sensitive caring way, not 'god your ugly cause your so fat'...if I do lose the baby, and I do lose a bunch of weight by the time he comes back home, he said he will take me on a cruise. That is motivational and helps me work harder on it. Better then saying "your fat" :)Please Log In to post.
