@deeliman: That's understandable, I was stick thin until I was about 25 years. Too thin I might add, I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain a single pound. It was kind of frustrating. But after 25 I suddenly gained about 10kg, while I didn't change my eating or exercising pattern. I'm 34 now and my figure is pretty good if I might add ;-)

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you once were. Your Dutch, so you probably know about those ggd gewicht/lengte richtlijnen right? I'm just a tee bit under the normal curve for weight. What is funny about being so thin is that it looks like you have a 6 pack even though you never work out :P

That's true, I had a wasbordje deze zomer.... but now it looks more like an afdruiprekje... Haha, no I'm getting in shape again pretty easily still.

In America it is completely acceptable to shame smokers. People will say to a smoker's face:

  1. Smoking is a turn off
  2. Smoking will kill you
  3. Stop smoking/change your habit
  4. I don't care if you like smoking, I don't want to smell it

While someone else being fat doesn't harm my health, it does hurt my wallet in terms of increased health care costs, and thus I see no reason why the obese should be sheltered from similar treatment. Time to spike taxes on foods high in sugar and fat.

I think shaming smokers is wrong too.

However, I don't think merely expressing the opinion that smoking (or being fat) is a turn off is "shaming" them.

I may not be shaming, but people are comfortable expression a negative opinion of smoking in front of smokers.

Two days ago I was with a friend in 7/11, and this friend went to buy a pack of cigarettes. The clerk refused to sell them because he did not smoke and did not think a young healthy man should smoke either since "the corporations are trying to kill you". I wonder if he refuses to sell soda to overweight patrons .

We were both pretty shocked, but you never know what is going to happen at a 7/11 at 2am.

Two things:

-I love it when thin people say they eat junk and never gain weight but I bet if they take a blood test, their blood sugar/glucose level, their blood pressure, their HDL/LDL levels, their cholesterol, their triglyceride level, and even their lung capacity would be off the charts bad and they would be candidates for a major stroke or heart attack; being healthy isn't just being thin, it's the condition of your blood and internal organs

-for those who say fat people don't affect them: again, not for name calling but I ride public transportation daily and it is EXTREMELY unpleasant to have an obese person sit next to me on a train or bus (which has happened fairly frequently)

@cain006: Maybe because you're living the life the way you want to, so f*** whatever anyone else thinks about it.

That's sort of the thing about the "be true to yourself" message that gets so propagated in society as a positive thing. Be a rebel. Be daring. Be brave. Be willing to stand up for injustice. Be willing to stick to your principles. Popular culture teaches us that that's what heroes are made out of.

But being fat? F*** that $hit, fat people look gross.

Anyway, just my little rant against the "anti-fat" sentiment out there. A lot of it is total bull$hit, just an excuse to treat someone like $hit because it's a no-effort way of making us feel like we're better than others. Judging others by their looks, yadda yadda yadda. "Hey, I have no idea what you contribute to society, you could be a brilliant engineer or surgeon. But all of that means squat because YOU LOOK FAT."

On the other hand, someone else hit the nail on the head. It's not as if this negative view of fat people popped up overnight. For a LONG freaking time, being fat has been seen as being unattractive. So...fat people sort of know what they're dealing with. In that sense, the complaining from fat people sort of annoys me too. Yeah, people look down on you for being fat, but (in most cases), they sort of have that right, don't they? Don't expect them to respect you because that's just spinning your wheels in the sand. I don't get a job as a telemarketer and then play the victim card when people think I'm scum for doing that kind of work. You don't get respect by forcibly making people respect something that they hate. That just breeds resentment. No, you start out with being TOLERATED, that's a reasonable right. Then you EARN any social respect that is due to you. But people really do have a negative opinion of fat people, that's just a fact that fat people need to accept. If you're fat and you get respect, it's probably going to be despite your obesity rather than because of your obesity. Trying to convince people that fatness is beautiful on its own is just a stupid endeavor.

People need to stop playing the victim card and either make changes to their diet and lifestyle, or stand up and be proud of who they are ("fat pride" is a thing now).

That whole thing makes no sense to me. Why the hell should you be proud that you're unhealthy?

Bill Burr makes fun of fat people on his podcast. He's had people write in saying that what he said gave them motivation to lose weight. I don't see the big deal about the stuff those guys said TC. Most fat people have no excuse for being unhealthy.

Just to point out, I always feel ashamed when I play videogames. Always felt like stupid f***ing bull$hit that just amounted to people wasting their time. And then social media came along and I discovered how many gamers were hateful antisocial pieces of $hit, and I felt further shame by just being part of such a community.

This is not a new concept. There have been posts about how gaming community sites such as this one have propagated the ideas of "ownage" and "ridiculing the idiots" and "giving people an inflated sense of self worth despite them having done literally nothing to earn it." It's the primary reason that $hit like The Jerry Springer Show was so successful, and no...that kind of crap is NOT healthy.

But hey...lots of $hit that isn't healthy is also sort of fun, so I like to avoid throwing stones because I live in a glass f***ing house. To fat people's credit, at least they KNOW that being fat is unhealthy and they don't get the luxury of travellling through life with the illusion that their $hit doesn't stink (well, most of them at least).

Also I thought fat shaming is helpful, you know like a motivation to get into shape

@MrGeezer: why do you frequently post walls of text? Judging by your post count, you must know by now that most people wont read it..

TOPIC: Making someone feel ashamed about something as fundamental as body weight is childish behavior, and if you do it, your middle school principle would like a word with you, bully.

"Fat shaming" should really be "unfit shaming". Its unfair because there are skinny people who eat the same things as some overweight people do and are still skinny, but they are just as unfit.

How about if we stop "shaming" people for this kind of $hit entirely?

And don't get me wrong, being fat is a flaw. It is unhealthy, and it is unattractive (otherwise, there wouldn't be such a big industry catered towards weight loss). Let's be real...it's a flaw. So it's kind of stupid for people to be PROUD of being fat, because taking pride in character flaws is not a good thing.

But we can take pride in ourselves DESPITE our flaws. At least, I really f***ing hope so because otherwise we're all just going through life feeling ashamed of ourselves. EVERYONE f***ing has flaws, but it's generally accepted that people can have a certain level of pride in their OVERALL selves despite being flawed in some ways. Yes...otherwise productive drug users should be allowed to feel pride despite the fact that they use drugs. Using drugs might be a flaw, but it doesn't just invalidate everything else about them. Some people waste their time playing video games, some people screwed around in school and wasted their potential, and some people are too fat. Let's not dress flaws up as things to be proud of, but simply having flaws (in this case, the flaw is being fat) doesn't f***ing mean that the person should walk around feeling shame all day long.

And for the love of god, if you are going to try to make someone feel shame based on a flaw, then you had better know that person and you had better not have flaws that are just as apparent. This reminds me of one time when I was smoking a cigarette outside. Then some apparent (and FAT) anti-smoking crusader waddled up to me and then tried to give me a lecture on my vice. That did NOT f***ing go well for her, because I turned that $hit right around and ended up with her waddling away in tears because I ruined her self-esteem. And like...fair's fair. I don't like to harp on fat people for being fat, because I've got my own flaws. Don't throw stones in a glass house. But the second that I get accosted for my flaws by someone with grotesquely obvious flaws, you bet your ass that I am gonna turn that $hit right around. And I'm not talking about stuff like murder or theft, pretty much everyone can agree that doing that kind of stuff is a dick move. I'm just talking about basic "harmless" flaws such as being fat, being an alcoholic, screwing around in school rather than buckling down and studying, or totally sucking at their jobs due to sheer laziness. I walk around and see flawed people everywhere, but I don't generally try to shame them because I'm not a hypocritical asshole. Yes, I should be allowed to feel pride DESPITE my flaws, so should fat people. If I'm gonna decide that fatness is one of the things that warrants a person feeling an overall sense of shame, then I had better look like a f***ing saint by comparison.
