Jeff Loomis is someone who has been very quickly becoming one of my favourite guitarists. I can definitely see myself taking a lot of inspiration from him.

And Dimebag will always be one of my favourite guitarists.

Truetrue, he's a Guitar god. Pink Floyd's not my kinda music though unfortunantly. That's the only thing stopping him from being on my list.

I do like Floyd's. Just don't listen to 'em all the time, gotta be in the mood you see. Got Dark side of The Moon and The Wall on CD. As for Slash, he's a brilliant guitarist, Guns'n'Roses are a pretty awesome band. But yeah, the new slash solo stuff's not great.

I think Ed O Brien, the other Guitarist is a better technical Guitarist. But It's weird, y'know. Radiohead don't actually use that much Guitar anymore. They have two of the best Guitarists in modern times and Thom don't wanna write music that way anymore. Not got anything against the electronics. Just sayin'

Hmm, I don't think Ed is better than Jonny really. Not with technical guitar skills anyway. Pretty much all the raw guitar stuff he plays is just strumming chords and playing arpeggios. Ed's mastery lies in the use of guitar effects pedals to create those unique background noises and soundscapes which are fundamental to the Radiohead sound (if there's a weird sound in a Radiohead song, you can bet your bottom dollar that Ed and his pedalboard were behind it). As far as effects go, there is no-one better than Ed in my opinion. But as for technical guitar skills, I'd always plump for Jonny.

I also think it's a bit unfair to level the shift to more experimental music squarely at Thom, which a lot of people do. Obviously Thom is the big electronica guru in the band. But Jonny at least has certainly played a big part in their change of direction. If you read any interview or anything he's given in the last 10 years, he'll always mention classical composers, electronic artists, jazz artists etc. as his main influences before he'll mention any popular music or guitarists.

A problem with me and a lot of good guitarists is though they may be awesome at what they do, they just don't create anything that's memorable for me, I like to be able to humm that song later and that's almost impossible with a lot of it.

Totally. a lot of non-pro guitarists can shred all day, but the big thing is coming up with that one memorable riff. None of these guitarists we've mention would be nearly as well known if they played stuff that just sounded like mindless shredding. That's what makes them gifted imo.

Celldrax

He's so musical with his speed =]

It doesn't even matter if he might not have the skills of composition and the knack of having his tonality, structure and form in sync with other instruments to tie in a whole piece together! Because he's technically good at his instrument!

Bob Vigna (of Immolation) I guess.

I don't care for music by just guitarists and I don't care enough to single out guitarists from a band I like. It's more about the music as a whole and how it all comes together for me. Sure, I can enjoy sweet riffs and solos done well, but it's about the music being made, not talent or skill of the guitarists or whomever.
