let's excuse the "Godfather"'s and the "Citizen Kane"'s and those super Oscar Winning movies... let's think about the awesome movies that don't have as much recognition...

my not-so-obvious favorite movie would be Fight Club. If you watch it more than once, you see that the whole movie was thought up a great deal...and i'm thinking of getting the book soon.

Mine would be 'Collateral'. I enjoy the whole idea of the story, and Tom Cruise does a very good job of being a cold-hearted assassin.

Memento is a fantastic movie that im pretty sure not a lot of people have seen. The whole movie is played in reverse as the lead charactor with no short term memory tries to find out who killed his wife.

Die Hard. I don't know how popular it was in the 80's, but it's a damn fine movie.

oh man american history x was a movie to remember...edward norton is really a brilliant actor especially when you factor in the rolls he's played (neo-nazi in american history x...i don't know what you can call it in fight club without spoiling the ending...)

I own it. It's good.

I saw Memento when it came out in theaters. It's also good.

My choice for a great movie that flew under the radar of mass appeal is Lost in Translation. It was critically acclaimed but wasn't hugely successful financially. It's not overly cerebral and doesn't pretend to be. It just perfectly captures the experience of loneliness and discontentedness.

I also think Lessons of Darkness by Werner Herzog is a powerful film.

Although it was successful, I never though of Ghostbusters as a huge favorite movie, even though it is mine. Maybe it's just me really.

Yep, one of my alltime favorites. Donnie Darko is great...I didn't like the director's cut, though. That computer stuff at the end kind of cheapened the story for me. The theatrical release had a more mysterious air about it.

Agreed. The theatrical release is much better... the whole pages of the book thing ruined it for me. took out the mystery, as you said. part of the fun of watching donnie darko is saying wtf at the end, and then trying to forulate your own theory as to what the hell actually happend.

I love that film. I bought it on DVD without ever seeing it before. I knew the basic plot outline, but when I found out the whole thing was going in reverse I thought it was an awesome way to make the movie.
