As far as mainstream pop songs are concerned, which one do you think is the best or what is your favorite?

My choice is Like A Prayer by Madonna.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA983t3Rdzs&ob=av2e

Everything from the melody to the powerful lyrics (with all their double meanings) to the stunning choir section is pure majesty. This sort of level of quality simply doesn't exist in pop music anymore.

The lack of a song this good is what will always make Lady Gaga just an imitator.

So that's mainstream in Japan?

I'm just curious since that was actually all right for being J-pop.

.... it's Korean and we Koreans are very offended when our culture is misunderstood as Japanese. besides, J-POP is little more... cuter. K-POP is more refined, fit for clubs, and ultimately more awesome. ha. :P

Oh, sorry. lol.

I actually wasn't paying close attention to it at all. I just sort of casually listened to it and it sounded sort of like J-Pop, so...

Anyway, the differences that you cite between the two types of pop explains why I like your song better than almost all the J-Pop I've ever heard. The production is more creative.

Hounds of Love by Kate Bush is simply wonderful. The song and the album.

If we're looking at some more recent stuff, Sleigh Bells is a pretty awesome pop band. They're very loud, very guitar-driven, yet incredibly poppy. Crown on the Ground is such a catchy song!

Also, everything Robyn does is pure pop gold. This year she released Body Talk pt. 1 and 2, which are both amazing. How in hell is this girl not bigger than Lady Gaga or Ke$ha, I'll never understand. She's got the looks, she's got the voice, she's got the hooks... Her songs are instantly relatable and melodic, yet there's always a subtlety or a certain quirkiness in the instrumentation. One of the great pop artists of our time. Check out "Dancing on my own" or "Be Mine".

GreySeal9

Hey, I remember you from that other thread where we were both discussing the futility of today's pop compared to that of the 80's.

Anyway, I can't possibly think of one, single favourite pop song of mine since I love TONS of them (from the 70's, 80's and early-to-mid 90's.....none of that present time rubbish) so I'll list a couple of my favourites:

  • Kate Bush - Deeper Understanding
  • Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
  • Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
  • Don Henley - Boys of Summer
  • Madonna - Live To Tell
  • Glenn Frey - You Belong to The City
  • Steve Winwood - Valerie
  • Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes

I could go on and on and on and then some more.

You have no idea how much I miss the 80's.

I really don't get the whole Lady Gaga=Madonna thing. I can think of 3-4 strong similarities between them, but not enough for Gaga to get the OMG she's a Madonna copycat reaction so many people have towards her. If the worst people can say is that she's Madonna 2.0 then I guess thats not so bad because Madonna's pretty freakin awesome even if she hasn't done anything really interesting in the past 10 or so years.
