I love all of Robert Heinlein's work, but my favorite is Stranger in a Strange Land. Edgar Rice Burroughs is awesome, and I particularly like the Venus series. Sergei Lukyanenko, with Night Watch being my favorite. Alan Moore, favorite- The Black Dossier Ray Bradbury, favorite- The Martian Chronicles Books I love but haven't really read enough of the authors' bodies of work to call them "favorite authors": Dune The Moonstone Aeneid The Iliad & the Odyssey Ender's Game I'm sure there are a lot I'm forgetting...

I noticed this about myself, too. I rarely finish a book i don't really like (unless I have to for class), so almost every book I finish goes on my "books I loved" list.

It's actually the opposite for me. Now matter how dreadful a book is, I keep on reading until I finish it. This way, when I'm against it in an argument, I have more credibility :P

Dune is sitting on my shelf but I never thought of actually reading it, I seem to think that it will be as dry as the Dessert on the front.

Go ahead and read it. Just pay attention, much detail is given in passing.

What, do you get pleasure out of not being able to read Ye Olde English? Or do you get your kicks out of reading aloud some of the infamous monologues? :P

kafka was brilliant. i love his surreal darkly comedic style, bizarre characters, and dense works. and holy ****, the logic is punishing. tolkien was a man who simply knew stories. he could take ancient texts and cut directly to the core of what made them entertaining. he also had a david lean-like ability to tell incredibly epic tales but make them feel personal.

Much as I enjoy Lovecraft, I wouldn't put him on a list of my favorite authors because I think he's kind of a terrible writer.
