I enjoy impressionist music more than anything else, specifically Debussy, Ravel and Satie. I haven't really studied it enough to describe it writing, but it seems to be the most complex form of music ever written.

This here is one of my favourite pieces.

Would Dmitri Shostakovich be considered popular? His 5th and 10th symphonies are incredible.

Debussy is great. I fell asleep to "Sirens" last night and had some very wacky dreams (and I'm not saying it's boring, I was just really tired).

I put popular in quotation marks for it to be in the sense it usually means, e.g. The Beatles, Britney Spears etc, not in the literal sense.

I listen to tons of Holst. He's gotten some mainstream acknowledgment and praise over the years for his Planets Suite, but he composed a lot of really, really great music. He's kind of big in the band world because he composed basically the first piece that was written with strictly band in mind (instead of orchestra music being rewritten for bands), and that was the First Suite in E-flat. He also wrote a Second Suite, which is equally fantastic.

Brahms is very hard for me to play, as I can't quite grasp that yearning, longing feeling in his music - more specifically his Intermezzo in B minor which I've been playing. (Look at how she plays it!) Big music, and I often compare Muse to him.

kdawg88

That'll come. Like all great music, Brahms's works are challenging to learn and perform. The ability to easily portray what you feel with this instrument takes many years to develop. But if you're working seriously on that intermezzo, then it means you're fairly advanced already. I didn't develop a true appreciation for Brahms until I was in my very late teens. The appreciation became FAR deeper when I developed the capacity to understand the intricacy of his work. It's not just beautiful to listen to, but astoundingly well crafted.

Béla Bartók is my favorite by far. His string quartets specifically the second and fourth are some of the most exciting and beautiful compositions ever. Unfortunately I've not seen him mentioned that often, and he's only really well known in his own country.

I'm not big on 'underground' classical composers haha

I will put a vote in for Elgar though since he is often overlooked in the great classical composers debate, mostly because he is quite modern I suppose, but I've yet to hear a piece of his that I didn't instantly love. It's ingrained in my though since I live where he lived and look at what he looked at when writing.

Mozart is my favourite 'popular' composer.

For artist I'd have to say Katica Illenyi - a phenomenal violinist. Here she is playing William's 'Schindler's List', of course that is a popular piece but it continues to be a challenge for me, and she so flawlessly gets the last note! Eight years and if I go anywhere high on the E it *still* sounds likes cats dieing. I have high-e envy. :P

I'm a huge fan of Samuel Barber, though he's probably one of the more popular 20th century composers out there. Piano Concerto and Second Essay for Orchestra are two of my favorite pieces to listen to.

Other than that, I also like Vincent Persichetti's work, but he writes more for wind ensembles. Masquerade and Divertimento are his most famous works.

Do you know a lot of his chamber music? The quintet falls into that category. And have you heard his other three symphonies, piano concertos, or the violin concerto?

Both of the works you mentioned represent his darker side, so I imagine you'd like things like the clarinet quintet, the c minor symphony, the c minor piano quartet, the c minor trio (lots of c minor!) the f minor clarinet sonata, the d minor violin sonata, and certain late piano miniatures / songs.

Also, isn't the scherzo of the f minor quintet spectacular? I feel it's the most spectacular scherzo movement ever written.

As it happens, that scherzo was how I was introduced to Brahms - I had to study it for a music course. And yeah, it's fantastic :> I haven't listened much other Brahms, although I kinda liked the violin concerto. Anyway, listening to your suggestions at once \o/

I've never heard of that fellow. Do you know when he wrote the piece? It bears a strong resemblance to this work by Hans Zimmer. You hear the primary melodic motive in the strings.
