I like beagles. :P Although they shed and are known to bark, although mine is very quiet. I feel like the dogs that best fit your description are gonna be small dogs, I think!

I plan on getting a red male Doberman Pinscher. I want a smart dog that is designed for protection to guard my house when away. As well as good with my kids, cats, and has plenty of energy. I don't want a small dog because they are useless for protection, but I do like small dogs as well. I don't want a long haired dog.

Dobermans go crazy as they get older and turn on thier masters. Bad Idea...

It's because thier skulls become too small for thier brains due to breeding.

golden retriever puppies ftw!

a

but be careful, some of them grow long hair that will shed a lot, but i think there are some that have short hair. if you get a short haired one, you get all the cuteness but much less of the shedding :)

Shih-tzu''s dont shed and are awesome dogs. ive got two, one is our family dog(though she has pretty much become my dog) and the other is my older sisters.

they are nice little lap dogs.

oh and you may be thinking that shih-tzu's are always long haired dogs and requires alot og grooming, but thats not always true. we keep our shih-tzu's hair pretty short and she doesnt seem to mind it at all.

you take her to a place where they cut her hair?

yes that is an option, but most places (every place around where i live, anyways) will require your dog to be up to date on all their shots or else they won't cut their hair. the shots can be very expensive, which is why my we haven't been able to get my 3 golden retrievers hair cut.

That's only half true. It could happen. Not all are that way just like not all dogs get Hip Dysplasia. I had a Doberman growing up and he was great. So um, no not a bad idea. I did my research and know what I am talking about as well as what I want. The whole brain thing you mentioned isn't anywhere near as common as you try to make it sound.

yea we take her to a groomer to get her haircut. and yea, our groomer we have to have shots up to date and such.

but when i said that shih-tzu's may require alot of grooming, i didnt mean professionally or what have you, i meant they take alot more work to keep clean and keep the hair straight and soft. ie. brushing them once a day. bathing them daily etc. just things that can be done at home. not necessarily going to a groomer and having them do it for you.

I've never met a golden retriever that wasn't the nicest thing in the world. My dog's half golden retriever and half cocker spaniel. She's basically a mini golden retriever.

almost all dogs bark. what determines if they make you crazy with it or not is your reaction to it.

i have dobermans and they are security minded and bark when they hear sounds.

i go to the window check to see what they are barking about, if i see what they are barking about and i approve of the barking (say a person in the backyard or whatever) i say "good... all clear" meaning i am aware of what they alerted me to and then i call them away from the window and give them a treat.

if they bark for no reason i go "uh-uh" in a slightly disapproving tone meaning they gave me a false alert made me get up for nothing and they have to leave the window and get no treat.

what this does is make the dog think about if it is a real threat or something abnormal enough to get excited about or something that is meaningless to me(like another dog) and if they bark or do not bark are they going to be treated for it.

also sometimes randomly if they look out side and just peer about and leave the window without barking and if there is nobody back there i also give them a treat for making the decision to not bark.

if you are consistent about this they will only ever bark at stuff not supposed to be around and not at your neighbors and their dogs while still alerting you to security threats or unusual occurrences.

p.s. oh yeah, and NO YELLING, barking is a pack activity and if you yell the dog will think you are joining in on the fun.

I like bigger dogs but my condo building doens't allow them. My wife and I got a terrier mix from the shelter so I'm not sure what he's mixed with exactly. When we move to a house down the road I want a Boxer. But I'm pretty happy with my little guy. I feel more strongly about adopting pets from shelters more so then particular breeds though. The animal shelters have so many animals that nee good homes and it sucks they get left behind while people spend thousands of dollars on purebreed dogs from breeders.

i'm glad to hear that, boxers are hugely popular right now which means there are tens of thousands of them in the shelter system right now.

i bet it takes you about 15 seconds on google to find a boxer rescue in your area.

German Shepards (I once knew a former police German Shepard. it knew commands in over 7 languages .) and Huskies
