I did say once that I believe a lot of people read just to be different. I didn't say every single person who reads is like that, as that would be very untrue. That's a different subject all together though.

sune_Gem

We call those people morons and every group has them. There isn't really a need to single out readers for a personal vendetta

I have a friend who basically does everything that the minority likes. There's a long list of things I could bring up, but at one point he was telling me how much movies suck and how the book is always better. So I was in the mood to question this mindset and see what other people thought of it.

Interesting choice, but now that I think of it, there are quite a lot of songs that tell a nice little short story.

Don't forget opera and program music.

Though opera falls mostly under "stage."

Just going off of what DJ is mentioning. But yeah such thoughts I guess are better left ignored since its likely a waste of time engaging them.

I think that'd come closer to Stage Show, given the limited poll options.

I think it's a good idea to sort of analyze how each of them work. Books: You can just fit tons of stuff into them. Books are simply /bigger/ than movies or games. Perhaps only television can rival books for bredth and depth of content. In addition, you can actually work with the written language. Things like the narrator's voice, for example, in something like As I Lay Dying, add another dimension. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was adapted into a brilliant film, but it didn't have everything from the book, because as a movie we didn't have the same point-of-view from Bromden and so the film lost part of the story. Film: Books can do things that films can't. But films can do things that books can't because film is fundamentally a visual medium. Films like The Mission and Star Wars tell lots of their story through the visuals. You can certainly use imagery in books, but then that comes more from use of language than anything else. Stage: Live theatre has an extra level of intimacy that films and books lack. There's a connection between the performance and the audience that makes it seem closer. In addition, stage lends itself better to the surreal - works like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Last Five Years, and Assassins come to mind immediately. They can play a bit looser with convention in ways that it'd be hard to get away with in a film or a straight narrative. I certainly can't imagine Assassins as a book - it wouldn't make any sense. Video games... I don't know if they've really established quite that kind of identity. It's still experimenting, largely taking cues from films for storytelling.

Video Games and Movies: All have the potential to tell great stories, but so few can successfully pull them off and deliver.. Comics: There's a month wait for every 10 pages.... Walking Dead.. Books: Deliver a more personal experience. So books get my vote.

I voted motion pictures, but more specifically I'm thinking of TV. I don't think there is a better way to get emotionally engrossed in a story than to watch it week to week for years. And huge stories like Lost couldn't be told properly in any other format than a weekly show. Hell, I think I might even prefer Game of Thrones to the ASOIAF novels.

Books are more intellectually demanding but tend to provide a much greater amount of details, thematic content, character introspection/development, and other things than the other mediums do. Film/television is better for easy entertainment.

not necessarily, in manga you get 20 pages a week for a weekly series or 30-60 pages a month for a monthly series.
