http://mmajunkie.com/news/15713/breaking-news-strikeforce-signs-fedor-emelianenko-to-multi-fight-deal-m-1-to-co-promote.mma

"After last week's negotiations with the UFC failed due to co-promoting demands, Fedor Emelianenko has instead signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC's biggest competitor, Strikeforce."

"The organization today announced it has signed Emelianenko (30-1) to a multi-fight deal that will have him fight under the Strikeforce banner in events co-headlined M-1 Global. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed."

"No specific date has been determined for his first Strikeforce fight, but Emelianenko will make his promotional debut this fall on Showtime, according to today's announcement."

"Strikeforce is a top fight promotion that houses some of the greatest fighters in the world," said Emelianenko in a press release. "I am prepared to fight any of them."

It's sad to see Fedor act as a puppet.

I'm sorry, but if I'm a fighter, I'm not in it for the money...I'm in it to prove to the world that I'm the best. UFC is the biggest stage for MMA that he has yet to dominate and offers the most opportunity for sponsors and an increase in fan base if he were to decimate Brock. This is a dumb move on both a financial and reputation level...

Fighters USUALLY have a VERY SHORT Career (like most other athletes)

It is a job to them

This is the same with other pro athletes

99% of the time they go where they get the most money...not where they can win (best team) or get the best competition

They know they have a short career, every fight could be their last

They want to get paid

Don't be mad at Fedor

Be mad at Dana...his company makes the most money BY FAR...so pay the most if you want Fedor

Or don't pay the most, don't get him, but don't be mad about it

I'm with this one. Let's see how far one can go "for the love of the 'game'" when one has a family to feed and bills to pay. But good for Fedor. Someone needs to stick it to Dana (as awesome as he is) once in a while. Lol.

I think it's less about the money and more about having M1 Global working with Strikeforce. If I can remember correctly, Fedor was offered a great amount of money, but wouldn't budge unless a cross promotion was made between M-1 Global and UFC, which would have been stupid for Dana to do. Either way, if you want to blame anybody, blame Fedor.

It was the cross-promotional aspect of the deal, which was a dumb stipulation on Fedor's and M-1's part...

Business is business and one always has to look out for #1. It would have been stupid for Dana to do it and recognizing that makes him awesome. But for Fedor is looking out for his interests as well so he stuck with that. Really, Fedor will still get a few good fights here and there. So whatever. We'll see how it plays out.

On the bright side, this just makes Strikeforce an even more viable alternative to the UFC. It gives MMA fans something else to watch.

ok just wanted to get the anger out of the way. Anyway I guess Strikeforce is not a sellout. I don't know if their a big MMA company or not. But i know their smaller then the UFC. So maybe this is a good deal for them...

Strikeforce is the 2nd best MMA promotion out there right now. Dana White and the head of Strikeforce, Scott Coker, have a mutual respect for each other. Maybe not now, or in the future, but they respect each other's business savvy.

While Lesnar is undoubtedly the biggest fight out there for Fedor, I'd say that Overeem/Fedor is not much worse than Mir/Fedor and I'd also say that Rogers/Fedor and Werdum/Fedor is of exactly the same in import as Carwin/Fedor or Velasquez/Fedor. It's really not that bad a deal. Frankly, I'm just counting my lucky stars that Fedor didn't run back to Japan to fight Hong Man Choi again.

That's a shame. The best talent - exception Fedor - is in UFC. I'd like to see what he could do in that league.

Dana White offered Fedor a contract of six fights for $30 million. Throw in the fact that he could promote M-1 Global on his fight shorts and in his corner, and Fedor could continue to fight in combat sambo.

Fedor clearly has no interest in fighting the best fighters in the world, and is a pawn for his manager. White offered him everything one could ask for aside from co-promoting, which would be an insane thing to agree to.

Casual MMA fans don't know who Fedor is. No way should he have gotten an offer as gaudy as White's, and he turns it down?

Let him fight cans and not end his legacy with an exclamation point. That just means there will always be questions about his ability.

Overeem's always injured, he's beaten scrubs, and been crushed by most of the headliners he's fought.

Fedor will make short work of him, as well as the other top HW's in Strikeforce.

I don't know, all I know is Lesnar is 3-1? I think people make too big a deal about Lesnar tbh. But anyways, my comment was kinda silly. There are established HWs in UFC, but I don't see any beating Fedor. Who knows though, he'll probably be upset by some can now lol.

I don't think I'm being too clear lol, I'm upset he didn't sign with UFC, but I don't think this will do his legacy any harm.

If he signed with UFC and ran through their HW division, he would be remembered even by casual MMA fans as the greatest of all time.

Even hardcore fans will have a tough time calling him the GOAT since he now refuses to fight the best.

@Chutebox: Overeem is their HW champion @TM_Darkside Overeem's only beaten scrubs? I had no idea that Sergei Kharitonov, Igor Vovchanchyn, Vitor Belfort (2x), Mark Hunt, Cro Cop, and Paul Buentello were scrubs. He also murdered Badr Hari in K-1, which should've been flat-out impossible. Most thought Hari was going to kill Overeem. Overeem is a frequent top tenner for a reason. Unless you're going to tell me how Kongo/Carwin/Gonzaga/Velasquez are better than him. I honestly believe that Overeem/Lesnar would be a compelling match-up and that Overeem would actually stand a pretty decent chance.

Overeem hasn't beaten Mirko.

Update from sherdog!

"Fedor is **** joke," UFC President Dana White responded Monday after learning that Emelianenko had signed with Strikeforce. "He turns down a huge deal and the opportunity to face the best in the world to fight nobodies for no money!"

Like Dana saying that would be a shocker LOL. I was hoping he would end up in the UFC, but besides a fight with Lesnar and maybe Couture, nothing else there interested me. The HW division as a whole is just to so shallow right now. Overeem is an interesting fight as well that we might get to see soon.

Not to mention, he still has 3 fights left on his M-1 contract. If he wins all his fights while in Strikeforce, I would expect him to go to the UFC afterwards.

Sigh...

He's going to finish out his career fighting cans...

I can't imagine how pissed off Dana is, expect a statement from him with a **** load of curse words and the phrase "crazy Russians" coming soon.

Paladin_King
HW Alistair Overeem is a can? That's news to me. Also, record-wise, Rogers isn't any worse than Carwin/Velasquez.

but Rogers hasnt really proved that hes good at anything else besides boxing, hes decent though

[QUOTE="Chutebox"] Overeem is with Strikeforce? Didn't know that. They have to have the fight in Japan then lol.Paladin_King

Overeem's always injured, he's beaten scrubs, and been crushed by most of the headliners he's fought.

Fedor will make short work of him, as well as the other top HW's in Strikeforce.

Overeem lost twice to Shogun.

And Vovchanchyn was good, but not great. Not quite a gatekeeper, but certainly not a premiere fighter. And the guy was tiny. 5'8", spent most of his time at 205.

Fact is, Overeem was a B-level 205'er. That can't possibly be in dispute.

And now he's supposedly a top 10 heavyweight because of wins over Paul Buentello and Gary Goodridge? Alright...

[QUOTE="Sajedene"][QUOTE="rawsavon"]

Vuurk

I'm with this one. Let's see how far one can go "for the love of the 'game'" when one has a family to feed and bills to pay. But good for Fedor. Someone needs to stick it to Dana (as awesome as he is) once in a while. Lol.

The UFC offered Fedor a 30 million dollar contract. This is a lot more money than he could get anywhere else.

That whole deal turned out to be fake by the guy who went out and said that was what Fedor was going to get.

Overeem was certainly not the best 205er in PRIDE, but he was no slouch. Not to mention, the weight cutting killed him.He is now a HW and certainly seems to fit better at that weight. He was killiing himself cutting the weight to get to 205.As for Igor Vovchanchyn, he was one of the best HW's in the world between 1998-2001. The guy is a legend. He was tiny, but killed most HW's and his record shows it. Saying he was not a premiere fighter is plain silly. He spent most of his career at HW not LHW. He dropped to LHW late in his career.
