Feedbackula - Johnny deserves a medal & community need to appologize to Caro

I do enjoy feedbackula, but after seeing how angry and quite possibly hurt Johnny was with the Gamespot community regarding how cruel people where towards Carolyn Petit, i think he really deserves something for speaking his mind and supporting her. I don't know if he was made to speak like he did or whether he just spoke his mind. Either way, i'm honestly proud and happy to see him stick up for her. I honestly didn't know this was going on, i knew people would get angry, but i honestly didn't know it would become something so seriously out of hand.

I do disagree with Carolyn's rating, but it's just a review and no one should ever threaten or even attack her or any staff member or any gamespot member at all. She gave her honest thoughts about the game and that's that. We should also respect her review and let it be. I don't always agree with every review gamespot gives to it's games like Rome 2 which got an 8. I feel it deserves a 5 with the way it is. But that's me.

Johnny did brilliantly and i think he did the right thing by speaking about what people have been doing and saying. Gamespot has allowed it's users to get away with so much in my eyes, but no one should have reacted the way they did. It's online bullying and she doesn't deserve it, hell, she didn't even do anything at all to cause it.

I think people should appologize to her, i don't know how, but one way or another, people should at least support her, not turn against her.

Maybe Gamespot should have more than one person reviewing a game from now on, that way it gives it's users more of an idea with different views from different staff members. It would appear that reviewing games by one person seems to make people angry. If you don't like the rating he or she gives it, just walk away or comment on the parts you disagree on without turning violent which it appears people have been doing.

I can only imagine how hurt she is right about now. She didn't deserve it whatsoever and people really need to learn how to respect others. You are free to disagree with a reviewer, but you should never disagree in the wrong way when it comes to "fire her, screw you" etc

Just remeber, the game got a 9, yes, i disagree that it doesn't deserve a 9, but it's still an epic score none the less. Please be more thoughtful from now on, because maybe next time, Gamespot wont be so forgiving when it comes to users threatning and being agressive to it's staff

Oh, and just to let you people know, i would be very careful about what you say on this topic, if a staff member comes in and see's you being hurtful towards her, you pretty much just got you'reself marked as an online bully and have a higher chance in getting caught.

Yeah it' s one of the most fun shows here. They currently have some pretty good ones actually like Reality Check(science in video games) and The Point or Random Encounter(the host Danny O'Dawyer is awesome).

I think caroline is fine.I was shocked when I read the comments section on monday.

Well I never expected the net to be filled with intelligent people in the first place, but the comments for that specific review is pretty darn grim.

I think he deserves praise for lamenting how abusive alot of people are in their wording, even if you disagree with the review some people genuinly seemed pissed. If that pisses you off, then you really don't belong in any gaming site, becuase no reviewers has your specific taste. I disagree with alot of Caro's points but sure ain't annoyied by them, I know her personality, and thus I can decide if the critiques would have been my own.

And while this seem a bit out of place in OT, I suppose it might be one of the better places to place this topic, given hwo it is not about a review, but how people act on this site.

I suppose a purge round might be in order. (sadly alot of those borderline insane people will come running right back)

no one got pissed about the review, they got pissed at the numerical rating and one of the headnotes in "the bad" section.

just another reason why gs should ditch that stuff, along with the stupid emblems, and let reviews stand on their own merit.

Eh, she goes on about women in games in many of her articles.  I find it hard to believe she's not simply over compensating considering she was originally a he.  She knew what she was doing when she added those comments into her review.  She gets a rise out of everyone with all of her 'we need more women protagonists' articles so I don't know what she thought would happen when she added a similar concept into such a huge game review.

Many of the comments on that review were just downright deplorable. Name it and it was there: Personal attacks, insults, and even threats. You're free to disagree with the review, that's fine, but attacking the person who did the review is just childish, and I'm sure not all those nasty comments came from children.

+ I think that was an excellent video. It is truely disgusting to think people sit down infront of their PCs and will send abuse, threats and bully people just because they disagree with someones opinion. I wish it was easy to track people, just to name and shame these worthless pieces of shit.

I don't agree with those who were sending all the hateful messages and petitioning to get Carolyn fired, but the review felt pretty unprofessional in my mind as Carolyn obviously doesn't understand what GTA is about if she is going on about misogiony.

It is SATTIRE! It is meant to be poking at all sorts of different issues with society. It is not a game you get PC about.

God the game shows plenty of badly stereotypical Black characters, Mexican characters, rich characters, nerd characters, redneck characters, etc. and yet she just goes on about misgiony? If anything I think THAT is sexist and just really says something about her state of mind.

Anyways, reviewers should realize that they are almost ALWAYS going to be pissing a group of people off and need to know how to deal with the scum of the internet as that just comes with the territory unfortunately.

Don't want to sound like I condone the behavior of those who made the disgusting comments, but Carolyn needs to learn to deal with this childish behavior if she is going to be in this profession.

If you didn't see the plethora of personal attacks, you must have not got there soon enough, before the mods started deleting them by the truckload. At one point there was about 10,000 comments, and it would be a conservative estimate to say that 4-5 thousand of them were variations of "burn in hell for being a tranny".

I just want to say--again--something I have said many, many times before: Dispel the notion that a game starts at a 10, and gets points "docked" from it. That would be a really silly way to review a game.
Game reviews aren't mathematical logarithms. They are the result of an experience that makes an impression on the mental and emotional superhighway of the game reviewer. I don't have a spreadheet that starts with a 10 and has calculations built in, where "low frame rate" = a .25 hit to the score. It doesn't work that way, and thank God for that.

My problem with the review on Gamespot is specifically the hypocrisy that a reviewer from that site accusing GTA V of Misogyny, and yet having a video posted a few hours earlier in preview of the game which included two women dressed up as prostitutes in the guise of comedy.

Furthermore the reviewer is a transgender and will only have ever suffered prejudice for their status as a transgender person (and you see plenty of these prejudiced comments on the Gamespot forums), and will not have had to suffer the type of sexist/misogyny (that she accuses GTA V of) that many women will probably have had to deal with either in their professional or personal lives.

As for the point, there is no point, that is exactly the point of most of these videos posted over the past few days that have come out in support of their colleague... blindly.  For the most part they are completely ignorant to the opinions of the people using their forum who's opinions, no matter how well put, they consider to be beneath them and contemptible.  They ignore what most people say and instead focus on the most extreme opinions and use them to wrongly represent those disagreeing with Gamespot and their point of view in this matter.  

Irrespective of Carolyn Petit' review of GTA V there are others on this site who are repeatedly silenced who think she is an absolutely terrible reviewer, who has double standards when dealing with the issue of sexism, and who quite frankly think the confusing nature of her reviews make a mockery of the scoring process on Gamespot.  An example of this is the review for Sleeping Dogs which was accused of being too violent (despite the fact it was set in Hong Kong using an undercover police officer to infiltrate violent Triad Gangs), and yet did not make any mention at all to the violence in Grand Theft Auto V or it being excessive despite the fact that it has, during one mission, a very violent torture scene which is just as if not more violent than anything in the aforementioned Sleeping Dogs which was, as I said, accused of being too violent.  

I've never understood the notion that having a fictional character with negative traits somehow reflects on how the author/creator views the group(s) said character is a part of. GTA V has always been filled with characters who are vile people, and most of them are men. Why isn't it misandrist, then? Or racist? People who think that GTA is misogynist are saying a lot more about how they view women than how Rockstar does. Fictional character A represents themselves, not their group. These kinds of criticisms are inevitably leveled by uncreative people who don't know shit about how the creative people craft characters.Rhazakna
