for someone unfamiliar, why exactly is 50 shades so popular? ... like i heard things but not sure how true they are.... do sexually starved virgin women read this since no man will give them the time of day, let alone be in the same room or bed with them, like they can't get laid.. so as recourse they read these books, and after each "exciting" part they manually please themselves? is that pretty much it? please explain.
My GF is a fan of the Fifty Shade books and I hardly know of it, but I'll explain why it got so popular. 50 Shades of Grey originally started out as a Twilight fan-fiction. (in my opinion, not a very good one) It's set in an alternate universe where Edward is a multi-billionaire who's into (terribly misrepresented) BDSM, and Bella is a college student. To avoid copyright infringement, Edward was renamed Christian Grey, and Bella was renamed Anastasia Steele. Many people, especially those in the BDSM community, are hugely opposed to it because the relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele has many markers of abuse, she describes him as intimidating, frightening, and cold, and he disregards her boundaries when she says "no" to sexual or BDSM activities (note that ignoring non-consent is rape, so he basically rapes and tortures her throughout the book). While this would make an intriguing thriller or murder mystery, for some reason it is depicted as romance.
Like I said, it's poorly written twilight fan-fiction re-skinned into a "romance" novel about an abusive relationship masquerading as BDSM. I think the short answer as to why it's so popular is because it stars a bland and blank slate of a female character with nothing to really distinguish her and this is relate able to many women. Then you have the strong, handsome and smart man who is always in control and normally would never be interested in this woman, but he sees something special inside of her that nobody else does. Of course that thing isn't really there and it's all fabricated, but many women love that shit.
In other words, blame Twilight for starting this mess in the first place.
