Fifty Shades of Grey: Is it any good or popular only because it's obscene?

Fifty Shades of Grey is going around at my school. About half of the Year 12's are reading it and/or talking about it, and only a handful of them actually read books regularly; because of this, I was considering picking it up sometime soon. I asked one of my friends about it and she knows I like reading so she recommends that I read it, but I don't want to read it if it's simply crude or offensive. Not that I would likely take offense to anything, but I don't want to waste my time reading it if it's bad.

So is it actually a well-written novel or is it only popular because of its obscene content? Also, is it 18+ or anything? I'm not quite there yet, I turn 18 next year.

It's Twilight porn that's only well received among horny teenage girls and middle aged women. Don't bother.

It's neither good or obscene

It's popular because it's popular - everyone feels like they need to read it to understand why everyone is talking about it, and that only happened because E. L. James was able to talk about it on The Today Show. If it's recommended there, even if it's only because she has connections from her former line of work, it must be good! They wouldn't steer the people wrong, would they?! :| The worst thing is that so many people (well, 90% of them are middle-aged ladies, not 20-somethings like the book's characters) ask if it's good, then buy it anyway if they dig for our honest opinion. One of my friends just finished reading it recently. She says the plot was weak and it was like reading porn. I'll admit my interest has been piqued.

It's bullsh!t. It's a Twilight fanfiction that was rewritten to focus on Ana and Christian instead of Bella and Edward. It's demeaning, sick, not even an accurate representation of BDSM. For those comparing it to Twilight, you people should know I have read all the novels. New Moon would be my favourite, although it wasn't groundbreaking; I wouldn't call it anything more than readable. Eclipse, on the other hand, is one of the worst books I've ever read.

It's popular because women are told it's popular. Much like the girl with the dragon tattoo.

Its so poorly written you'd think it would be funny. But no its actually depressing.

What's depressing is its sh!t like this that gets this generation of women reading literature, which is very sad and infuriating.

I guess people are jumping on the "Hey, have you heard of that book everyone is talking about? Yeah I'm going to read it" bandwagon.

I personally don't have any interest in reading it, and judging by a lot of the comments ITT, maybe that is for the best :P

The series kept my girlfriend quiet for 3 weeks so that was a plus, as for the book it self im too masculine to read it I'll just stick to comics :P
