Fifty Shades of Grey is going around at my school. About half of the Year 12's are reading it and/or talking about it, and only a handful of them actually read books regularly; because of this, I was considering picking it up sometime soon. I asked one of my friends about it and she knows I like reading so she recommends that I read it, but I don't want to read it if it's simply crude or offensive. Not that I would likely take offense to anything, but I don't want to waste my time reading it if it's bad.

So is it actually a well-written novel or is it only popular because of its obscene content? Also, is it 18+ or anything? I'm not quite there yet, I turn 18 next year.

don't bother, it reads like it was written by a chimp. Not one of the smarter chimps either, I'm talking about the ones that fling poo. I thought Twilight was bad, but 50 Shades is just trash.

I haven't read it but from what I've heard it's not poorly written but it's no masterpiece of literature either. Honestly the mass appeal seems to be the obscene bits. Also if you're squicky about BDSM it's probably not for you.

It's Twilight porn that's only well received among horny teenage girls and middle aged women. Don't bother.

Agreed. I'm not going to pretend I finished such a stupid book, but what I read of it was really terrible.

It's popular because it's popular - everyone feels like they need to read it to understand why everyone is talking about it, and that only happened because E. L. James was able to talk about it on The Today Show. If it's recommended there, even if it's only because she has connections from her former line of work, it must be good! They wouldn't steer the people wrong, would they?! :| The worst thing is that so many people (well, 90% of them are middle-aged ladies, not 20-somethings like the book's characters) ask if it's good, then buy it anyway if they dig for our honest opinion. One of my co-workers found this: I really know of no better way to express my contempt any better than this person has, but be warned of some NSFW content in the GIFs and the book itself. It is 50 Shades after all... http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/340987215

Fifty Shades of Grey, is that the one where the kid befriends the Nazi guy and ends up shooting everyone?

Or is it the one about the two BDSM lovers based on Twilight characters?

I mix them up.

The parallels between them are ridiculously easy to spot. How is she allowed to make money on it, isn't this plagiarism or something?

It's bullsh!t. It's a Twilight fanfiction that was rewritten to focus on Ana and Christian instead of Bella and Edward. It's demeaning, sick, not even an accurate representation of BDSM. It isn't even offensive, it's just stupid. Straight up moronic. Calling it the R-word would be offensive to mentally handicapped people.

The author admits she's not that good of a writer, and also that it was Twilight fan fiction she adapted for a new story. It's quite popular at my library, and we all pretty much admit that it's trash, but it is pretty smutty and I guess some of the workers there really enjoy it.

For those comparing it to Twilight, you people should know I have read all the novels. New Moon would be my favourite, although it wasn't groundbreaking; I wouldn't call it anything more than readable. Eclipse, on the other hand, is one of the worst books I've ever read.

Its so poorly written you'd think it would be funny. But no its actually depressing.

What's depressing is its sh!t like this that gets this generation of women reading literature, which is very sad and infuriating.

I guess people are jumping on the "Hey, have you heard of that book everyone is talking about? Yeah I'm going to read it" bandwagon.

I personally don't have any interest in reading it, and judging by a lot of the comments ITT, maybe that is for the best :P

The series kept my girlfriend quiet for 3 weeks so that was a plus, as for the book it self im too masculine to read it I'll just stick to comics :P
