I think the first Matrix movie made me say "holy crap, that was friggen crazy" and then I started to think the metaphysical possibilities of the entire story. Mind you, I was young but still.

The one movie that I am still thinking of constantly even to this day is 2001. It is just incredibly complex and I still have trouble wrapping my head around it.

A friend actually gave away all his cigarettes and wallet money after seeing The matrix saying, that it isnt real so he wouldnt be needing it.

After that he tried running on walls, didnt go to well though, he wasnt young, just stupid.

actually that movie did make me think, it was so confusing the 1st time i saw it i had no idea what was going on. Did not make me think as much as did inspire me and my friends to make our own fight club in one of my friends basements. Not as violent though, and it involved gloves and some times helmets.

Oh yeah, I just thought of some movies that made me think. Lilyah 4ever and F*cking Åmål (forgot the english title for that one, sorry).

They're not one of those "oh wow" movies, but they are good and sweet and funny. Lilyah 4ever is really rough if you come from a rich family who's never needed anything, because it's about a russian girl who's very poor and want's to move to america with her mother. I wont spoil it if you want to watch it tho.

12 Monkeys made me think the first time I saw it, mostly about the possibilities of Time Travel. Let the right one in made me think too, but in a different way. Not intellectual, but it made me think of myself in that situation, then I realized I would probably be dead pretty soon or would screw something up. Same with CIty of God.

"Frailty" A father tells his children that an angel of God has told him that he and his children are supposed to kill people (that are supposedly "demons") As a Christian this made me think about what I would do if I thought I was getting a message from God, or if my father did.....how much I would be willing to believe.

Requiem For a Dream was a movie that really made me think about the world and how people perceive each other and themselves. Ultimately, the four main people are the instruments of their own demise due to their various addictions; it is reminiscient of a Shakespearean tragedy. Although i was left somewhat depressed by this movie i have to say that it was very well done. To quote Franz Kafka, art that give us a grim realization are like an "axe to break the seas frozen inside our soul."

I was going to mention the same movie. Though my thoughts on it the first way through were "Dear God that was bleak." Ultimately though I think the character of Sara was the most innocent of the four characters, that makes it all the more painful to watch her succumb to her addiction. She went in with little to no knowledge of what the drugs could actually do to her. She had little support from anyone. The doctor was a hack. Her son briefly tried to warn her off the drugs but was too busy with his own life and addiction.

Not as deep as your thoughts but it's a wonderful movie that's interesting to examine.

That is a very underrated film, shame it didnt do well. Bill Paxton is amazing. Watch Near Dark to see him at his best.

Yeah i agree that Sara was the most tragic due to her ignorance. Also, the acting for her character was exponentially well done throughout the movie.

If a movie doesn't make me think about something, then there's not much use in me wsatching it.

But as for movies that really made me think, I would say these:

Waking Life

Slacker

Mulholland Drive

2001: A Space Odyssey

Children of Men

The Matrix, 2001, The Island, and Odd Girl Out. I saw Odd Girl Out in middle-school, and broke down in the middle of watching it, because it hit home so hard.
