I bought an excellent refurbished laptop from CSR Technologies on Ebay early this year and haven't regretted it. I trust them.

P.S. Make sure you get the free shipping if you do order one.

My bad, I accidentially skimmed the online part. Yeah, Walmart's good. I also hear Best Buy has some pretty good deals.

Get a refurbished and/or off-lease IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T-Series. Tigerdirect/Compusa occasionally sell them, otherwise look on ebay.

The Thinkpads are built like tanks. You probably won't even want anything else, and they can be found used for as low as $350.

Toshiba, HP, Compaq, and Gateway are junk. Dells are only good if you go with their Latitude business line. The Dell inspirons are crap.

Just go ahead and buy the Mac. Honestly it's not worth the extra money to wait because waiting for an upgraded model isn't going to work. Apple is revising their lines constantly, around every 6 months so within a few months the one from Christmas will be outdated anyway. I have a MacBook Pro from June and I love mine.

You're going to find mostly netbooks or crappy budget laptops with Celeron or AMD processors for that price. You might get lucky, but my guess is that $500 will be the sweet spot.

Crappy "made in China" build quality. If you want a cheap, disposable laptop that will fall apart in a year or two, go with one of those brands.

If you want something that will last, get a Fujistu, IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad, Panasonic Toughbook, Apple, or Sony Vaio.

Lenovo's business lineup of notebooks? Tanks? We must have gotten a bad batch at work, as they're some of the ugliest, most fragile notebooks I've ever had the displeasure of working with. They flex and creak when you pick them up, have loose plastic paneling around the ports at the back, and look like they came out of the 90s.

You're pretty much alone in that opinion then. The consensus on Thinkpads is that they have some of the best build quality of any notebooks on the market. I have an older one that was made by IBM and the thing is indestructible. I've dropped it numerous times with no damage. It even has motion sensors that lock down the hard drive in case it's dropped.

They also have the absolute best keyboards you will find on a notebook.

Sorry but if youre not smart enough to find a laptop for 450$ then youre not smart enough to go to college. I guess youre just destined to flip burgers all your life.

Maybe their newest ones have some issues, then, as I've always heard people mention they're sturdy. That or maybe they can take more abuse than they let on, but a creaking laptop isn't exactly a sign of confidence and someone's already managed to snap off one of the palm rests in the first two months. I miss the old Dells we used to have before IBM earned the contract - those things seemed far tougher.

I have a Toshiba. my daughters have an Acer, and a Gateway. and it's been almost 4 years now, never broke once.... Dells are over priced.

I had a Toshiba and it fell to crap in less than a year. It had to have the motherboard replaced three times. It would randomly, spontaneously shut off, sometimes right in the middle of me working on a paper. The original power brick it came with made a loud, high pitched hissing sound. The battery died in under a year with minimal use. The build quality was so bad, the DVD drive would not stay in place and would fall out of the side of the notebook. Keep in mind this was a notebook which cost $1300 and had top of the line specs when I bought it. It had a three year warranty, and I was having to have onsite service come out and repair the thing every 3-6 months.

The icing on the cake was when I took it apart to gut it for any usuable parts once the warranty expired. Critical parts inside were held together by masking tape. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry when I saw that.

My girlfriend also had a Toshiba and the onboard video died twice. She also had a hard drive go bad. After a year and a half, she was so frustrated with all the problems she was having, she ended up just getting a new notebook.

My mother had a Toshiba, and hers would overheat and shut off.

The build quality of the Toshibas is so terrible in my experience, I have no idea how there hasn't been a huge lawsuit.

A fat cat jumped landed hard on my Toshiba keyboard from top of a bunkbed, and still works fine till theses days.
