Some state legislator in New York is trying to pass a law, that if you cross the street while listening to your Ipod, or talking on your phone, you will be fined $100. Yeah right!

I think its rediculous, in my opinion. What next, we can't have a conversation with a person next to us on a side walk? Same type of distraction if thats what they're going for here.

I saw this earlier, and it made me wonder why that was the one issue that the dude decided to crusade against. Is he gonna run for mayor/governor/president on the 'I fough iPod related traffic fatalities' platform or something?

No more unenforcable than littering laws.

I throw my trash on the ground all the time, and I flick my cigarette butts out the window of my car every day.

And what's the big deal? Unless a cop sees me doing it, then no harm done.

But people DO actually get ticketed for throwing hamburger wrappers onto the ground, and people DO get ticketed for flicking cigarette butts out of their cars. Maybe not most of them, but I guarantee that in any reasonably sized city it happens at least once a day.

Pedestrians have the right of way first. They don't care how many people get hit by cars. It's a front. A deception. It's just another reason to fine people.

Besides a COP won't sight you for that **** unless you really piss him or her off. It's a waste of their time and trivial **** like that is just a hassle. They don't get anything for ticketing people. So if it's trivial and just a hassle, they won't bother.

Even if this passed (and it won't), couldn't someone caught just say they had it on pause/mute? I mean they can't prove anything, it's incredibly stupid.

link or BS. It's pretty random, but using a cellphone does break concentration, so just like in a car, it makes you more prone to screwing up badly. I don't think this should ever be made into a law, but the fact that cellphones break concentration should be told to everyone.

Cars have the right of way. That's why pedestrians have to walk it to that little button, press the little button. And wait for the little walkey man signal to show up before they can cross the street.

Saying that pedestrians have the rright of way is like saying that someone turning right on red has the right of way.

Just becuz two or three people died due to iPod or cellphone distraction, some idiot wants to make a law? I'm sorry, but if they don't pay attention, that's their own damn problem. We don't need a law.

I wish it were like that here, people stand less than a meter away from the cars on a busy street as they wait for an opening to run across. They remind me of squirrels. hehe

Don't forget about the people that will just run you down because they don't value any life and they can simply claim they didn't see you. Plus people just don't pay attention. They are half asleep most of the time. They're in the drivers trance.

And if you would run down pedestrians because of misconceptions of the way the law works (they shouldn't be jaywalking!), then you're an ass and you need to be removed from the gene pool, imho. :P

On the Australian news it said 400 people die a year from walking out into a car and most wear listening to an MP3/playing games or talking/texting on a phone so there might be a reason for this but I don't think there should be a fine people just need to smarten up and don't get so distracted.

1) Stop the insults now. This is your only warning.

2) You just contradicted yourself. First you said that they don't care how many people get hit by cars (which doesn't make sense), then you said that they give people the right of way to keep people from getting hit.

3) If you're driving down the street at 50 mph and you see someone waiting to cross, you do NOT stop and let him cross. Why not? Because that's dangerous, and causes accidents.
