Flag burning is such a powerful statement. There are a million other reasons they should be doing it, not because of soccer politics.

No there are NO reasons why folks in the UK should be burning OUR flag. They bought it; are you saying people don't have the right to do what they want with their own property?[QUOTE="IronBeaver"]

You know what the guy writing that article needs a good kicking to be honest. So because of a action of a few, the British are now deemed stupid? He is inciting hate torwards us? The guys burning the flag should be fined heavily and made to apolagise in some way to the Americans.LINK

We go way back, America and the UK. We've fought wars against each other and won ones side by side, and I'm proud to call some of my best friends Englishmen. To those noble English folks who can understand what it would feel like to watch a bunch of Yanks burning the flag of St. George in a public melee, I look forward to a spirited match on Saturday and may the best team on the day win.
But for those 500 or so Liverpool supporters (and most likely fans of the Three Lions) who simply acted before they really thought about what their actions meant to an entire nation, you've embarrassed your country, your club and your Queen.
Yeah, I said it.
What the author in the link said pretty much covers it.
And I agree with Pirate, it's disgusting.
The Queen and Parliament should be saying something about this...we are their best ally, saved their butts in two World Wars.:?

Oh, ok, so you find it offensive; sorry, I did misread. I find it silly on their part (protesting the actions of a couple of private citizens by attempting to inflame the entire nation where they live), but I also find it incomprehensible to get upset over. The me, the flag is merely a symbol, and burning it does nothing whatsoever to what is actually symbolized by it.[QUOTE="xaos"][QUOTE="Pirate700"]No there are NO reasons why folks in the UK should be burning OUR flag.

Our Flag isn't a simple symbol to those who fought to keep it flying free.
Whenever it is raised or lowered, if we are outside on foot, we stop, turn in the direction of the Flag and salute.
The U.S. Flag is never meaningless to a person in the uniforms of our Armed Forces.

To add to this, I'm sure there are things that ordinary U.S. citizens do every single day that offend the UK or other allies around the world. The key is that these are PRIVATE citizens who have broken no laws. They may be chowderheads to burn a flag over a freaking soccer game, but thinking that the UK government should have to issue some sort of statement because, amazingly, not everyone in their country is particularly smart or sensitive is silly and thin skinned. Best course of action here is to realize that there are chowderheads in every country who are going to do stupid things and move on.[QUOTE="xaos"] They bought it; are you saying people don't have the right to do what they want with their own property?xaos
Wow such an unbiased and level headed article...
The whole flag burning attitude in Britain is completely different to the States. We just don't really care. It's a flag. A bit of cloth. Those few Liverpool fans (and I hate Liverpool FC btw) probably wouldn't have known America as a whole would be offended by it. Though to be honest they wouldn't've cared if they did.

Maybe not in your experience, but to my brother and his wife, both Air Force officers who have served in Iraq, we've had this conversation. My brother said that he salutes the flag but only as a symbol. The Constitution and his perception of what he considers to be the spirit of the USA are what he says he enlisted to defend. No there are NO reasons why folks in the UK should be burning OUR flag.[QUOTE="Pirate700"]

What's sad is over there they see this matchup as apperently a big deal while over here in the States, we couldn't care less. I hope accross the ocean, they realize we couldn't give a rats ass if they beat us at soccer. :lol:The U.S. Flag is never meaningless to a person in the uniforms of our Armed Forces.topsemag55
Both of my brothers (one who recently got out of the Army after two tours in Iraq, the other currently in the Navy) would say that's not true... at all.
Understandable. But it is also two private citizens breaking no laws. My reply was mainly directed at Topsemag, who was saying that the queen or parliament should weigh in on this. It's a trivial thing in the big scheme of things. It has as much power as people allow it to have. I'm not trying to tell you what to think. I think it is a pretty stupid thing to do myself for a soccer game. But it's also pretty minor when you put it in context of it being just a couple of chowderheads across the world. (my word of the day is chowderheads apparently.)If I saw a US citizen burning the UK flag I would be disgusted also. Id doesn't make this situation any less disgusting just because we have idiots too.

We'll find out later this week ;)
I got dibs on USA 8)
I'm well aware that the U.S. squad in South Africa needs little more motivation to kick England's butt this Saturday, but I hope this little display of British stupidity ignites a nation.
Please tell you guys dont let idiots like this write for decent publications?

West Ham United. My reasons for hating Liverpool are purley personal rather than anything on the football pitch.
Cool I'm from Liverpool too.
Also I think you guys are overreacting, it's because the people who bought liverpool football club are american and pretty much run the club into the ground, nothing more to it.
But of course there's always people who want to act like a victim, I'm sure this flag burning really offended you, right?

The US and UK flags are two symbols that nobody in either side should be burning. Both are as close as it gets as allies and both have lost a lot of men defending each other's way of life and continue to today. A stupid ass soccer game that nobody here cares about is absurd as a reason to burn a flag, IMO.If I saw a US citizen burning the UK flag I would be disgusted also. The guy did come off as a bit of a douche..
Soccer fans, especially British soccer fans are pretty stupid sometimes. You can't use them as an example for all British people though.

No there are NO reasons why folks in the UK should be burning OUR flag. their still pissed about the american revolutionAny disrespect to the Flag bothers me.
Like when it was carried upside-down during a protest - the military does that only as a sign of distress.
We dispose of old, worn-out flags by burning - and even those are never allowed to touch the ground.
Perhaps you can understand my feelings on this, as I come from a long line of veterans. Two of my family's ancestors served in WWII, and one didn't come back - he died when a shell hit his Navy ship in the waters off of North Africa. The U.S. Flag was on his coffin, reverently folded and presented to his mother.
I think of that flag when one is desecrated.

Why would they be? The anti-war sentiment in the UK let you win that.. parliament just didn't bother due to public pressure. So if anything these guys have nothing to be pissed about in that regard.
However this is about managing clubs, Americans seem to be destroying clubs in England, look up glazers. This isn't meant to be a stereotype, it's just what is happening right now in the football world.
