Nirvana by a huge margin for me. The lyrics and the music of Nirvana meshed well and to me it was a good balance of the quietly poetic with the barely controlled screaming rage from both the music and and the words involved. Nirvana is a band whose music will stick with me for life, whereas to me Foo Fighters are just a decent generic rock band that has a good song or two on any given album.
Nirvana since Foo Fighter is purely a mainstream band even though Nirvana became mainstream they didn't become it willingly.

What's wrong with mainstream?
I pick Foo Fighters. I don't care if music is mainstream or not. I like music I like. I have all Nirvana and Foo albums, but prefer the Foo.
[QUOTE="lightleggy"][QUOTE="valereth-1"]yeah that's why he got choosen as the 13th best guitarrist of all time... If Kurt Cobain is the 13th best guitarist of all time, I'm a top ten synthesizer. Fun fact: he was voted into such a category because he's popular, not because he was any good. He had the ability to write good, simple pop songs, and merged those songs with a grunge sound. Yet, so did dozens of others. My Chemical Romance was voted the greatest band of all time, but it's hard to take such sweeping rankings seriously. Falling back to other people's equally educated opinions isn't a solid defense. Just saying. what they take in account for giving those prizes is not only your ability to play, but your song writing as well (not talking about lyrics, im talking tabs or partitures) and kobain wrote some of the most brillliant guitar songs everKurt Cobain was a talentless hack

[QUOTE="Xeros606"]Foo Fighters. I like Nirvana, but their songs have no meaning behind them at all. It's just random words that rhyme.Ontainerm ... what? the words were chosen well.
Dont make me go scour the interwebs for the lyrics to "Smells like teen spirit" or some other Nevermind song.
Both are preaty good... But im past the alt rock phase so i dont realy give either too much atention anymore.
Nirvana. Kurt Cobain's lyrics are have more depth and gravity behind them then Grohl's.
I really like Everlong, but I like a lot more Nirvana songs a lot more.
What's really impressive about Nirvana is the fact that a lot of the songs were very minimalist. Technically speaking, they aren't that hard to play or understand, but what they convey goes far beyond the sum of the parts.
Foo Fighters gets kinda grating after a while.
Nirvana is a better band and has a much more impressive catalogue.
Cobain's lyrics have more depth? Really.... Check the lyrics from Dumb and Rape me. The lyrics aren't that great at all. Any how Nirvana between the two is my choiceerm ... what? the words were chosen well.[QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="Xeros606"]Foo Fighters. Smells like… was a purposely nonsensical song – it was their attempt at a pixies song, lyrically and vocally (think Debaser as good reference point lyrically).
Both, but if I had to pick one I'd pick Nirvana, I'm obsessed with Nirvana, and Dave Grohl was better in Nirvana then he has been in any other group since

I can't believe I had that error in that first sentence...
Anyway to respond to your statement Dumb and Rape Me are actually two of my favorite songs from Nirvana. They both actually do have a lot of depth behind them. It's called symbolism.
Besides it's my own opinion. I like Nirvana more because I think they were a better band that had a highly influential sound that captivated a lot of people in the 90's. Not the best band I've ever heard, but you could do a lot worse. I just think they are better than the Foo Fighters.

The roots of Nirvana can be traced back through the sounds of earlier indie and post punk (they were embraced far more by the indie community than rock community when Bleach first burst upon the scene), whereas Foo Fighters use a more traditional rock template.
In the context of traditional rock therefore Foo Fighters would generally fair better. Nirvana astonishingly however managed to catapult itself through all of the late 80's dirge and manufactured rock rubbish, throwing traditional rock conventions out of the window and influence the world. That's something Foo Fighters have not and will never achieve. That is why Nirvana will be remembered in 50 years time, and Foo Fighters will be 'Foo Who?'
I cried a little that day in 1994, when I heard the news of Kurt Cobain's death. It was an emotional day for me. The anniversaryof his death is in 4 days.

I was on the way back from a club in a slightly altered state of mind when it came on the radio – I couldn't speak for the next few hours, it was all very strange. At least I managed to catch them live a couple of times, including their last ever (awesome) gig in the UK at Reading 1992 :P

I see the Foo Fighters as a band that is right in the centre of rock - they seem to be at a crossroads between mainstream rock and stranger, more alternative rock, and while they do some very hard songs, they have never touched metal. The Foo Fighters will CERTAINLY NOT BE FORGOTTEN, because they are a very enthusiastic band, despite lacking a certain flare. I will always see Nirvana as nothing more than the band that completely took the BS out of rock. They were going to break up eventually, but judging by In Utero, they had the potential to create some beautiful music.erm ... what? the words were chosen well.[QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="Xeros606"]Foo Fighters. Which songs are we talking about? Because the only songs I can think of off Nevermind with non-sensical lyrics are Smells Like Teen Spirit and In Bloom (which were both intentionally done that way).
