From the Article: An apple a day may keep the doctor away. But when you put it in a Happy Meal, it might help keep regulators at bay too. McDonald's on Tuesday said that it would add apple slices and reduce the portion of French fries in its children's meal boxes beginning this fall, effectively taking away consumers' current choice between either having apples with caramel dip or fries as a Happy Meal side. ======================= But apparently, customers aren't making those choices in practice. Indeed, only about 11 percent of customers were ordering apples with their Happy Meals, even though 88 percent were aware they had the option, the restaurant said. ======================= Full Article (sorry, can't link for some reason): http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_MCDONALDS_HAPPY_MEAL_CHANGES?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2011-07-27-00-54-46

Are we sure the apples are even healthier than the fries? Warm apple slices. How appetizing.

McDonald's fries are a war crime.

But I seriously doubt that caramel dipping sauce for the apples makes them a healthier option.

I dunno about Mickey D's, but BK uses a fat free caramel sauce that's only like, 40 calories for the packet. If McDonalds uses something similar, then yes, the apples would be better than the fries.

People need to stop being lazy. I can cook a healthy meal for 4 in about 30 minutes. No problem. Get the kids to help with the dishes and setting up the table and BAM healthy family meal.

When I see a really obese kid I just want to smack the parents laziness and poor decision making. That kid is screwed for life because the parents refuse to learn to parent correctly. They'll put the blame on everything but themselves. Grades low? Teacher's fault. Kid is fat? McDonald's fault.

Damn blame society.

In the time it takes to travel to McDonalds, buy the food, get the food, sit down and eat, I could have made a better meal. I think people and especially parents should stop blaming everyone else for their fat kid.

Once you're in that place it doesn't matter what you eat. It could be an apple, a salad or a Big Mac (my personal fave) -> All are unhealthy.

Yeah. They know exactly what they are doing. They have come out and said their food is not healthy. It's not trying to be. Stop taking your kids to these places! Make your own meal. It's cheaper and it's healthier.

I don't see how forcing McDonald's to be healthy will fix anything as it's all based on people solely dining at McD's. The emphasis should be on just getting people to cook healthy meals for themselves, restaurants and take aways shouldn't be part of the equation.

I really can't see the appeal. Sometimes they do nice specials but that's about it, KFC has a better standard menu.

McDonald's is emergency food.

It's like eating bugs when lost in the wilderness or drinking your own urine when you can't find water.

I hope our country's mcdonalds incorporate the same speedy implementation as we get with other mcdonalds decisions. That is 5-10 years and occasionally never.

That is ridiculous, when you go to McDonald's you know your not getting healthy food. They should not have to cave in rather the people complaining that its unhealthy shouldn't be eating food there in the first place.

Big Macs are amazing. Whoppers are amazing. Nacho Cheese Chalopas are amazing. Arby's Big Montana is amazing. Wendy's double with cheese is amazing. KFC pot pies are amazing. Anyone who says they are disgusting is a liar. Use common sense and get them as a treat 1 time a month or so or as a last resort. Quit with this I'm too good for fast food crap because you eat it. Everyone does.

I used to work in Mcdonalds (UK) the apple slices have always been choice, and I think they will be, too. We don't have dipping sauces with our apples, and neither are they warm, they're kept in the fridge, they only get warm because of the other food inside of the Happy Meal box. But most people know from experience to have them seperate. But to be fair, a while ago, a woman ordered a happy mean, and had the apple slices, but she asked for a little tub of Mcflurry chocolate sauce, so she could dip her apples in it, We also had someone who wanted chocolate sauce for the scrambled eggs. That was just wrong.

I had mcdonalds as a treat when I was a kid. When I was especially good at daycare, my mom brought me some home. I am not obese. The problem is not the meals themselves, it's the crappy parents who take their kids there five times a week or more.

I wish people would stop blaming the restaurants for people's obesity and start holding the PEOPLE who eat there responsible.

McDonald's in no way should have to change anything they offer. They aren't forcing people to eat it.

People DON'T go to Mcdonalds to eat healthy. Why in the world would anyone try to regulate how you can eat at Mcdonalds. If a kid is obese it's not anybodies fault but the parents for allowing their kids to eat so much and not get proper exercise.

McDonalds.. And junk food in general is much cheaper than healthy food.. Our local schools are more likely to serve junk food than they are to healthy food by a very large margin.. The fact of the matter is WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE TO WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? We have a problem here, and children.. As in not adults are the ones that are suffering for it.. We can go down that route and blame the parents, but yet again.. How exactly is that going to change anything when regulating the earlier is far easier and far more effective.. That being said I honestly think this should be the last thing they need to do.. What needs to be targeted is public schools and the erradication of all soft drinks, junk food etc etc.. My memory of high school food consisted of fried salty fast food.. You had to go OUT of yoru way to find something even coming close to healthy within the local school cafeteria.. And really this is all about consuming. When children watch tv.. I agree it has much to do with the parents, I just don't SEE HOW acknowledging this is some how going to stop the obesity epidemic.

So yet again how would you solve this? Force these parents into special teaching? People seem to be great at stating the obvious but not providing any solutions what so ever about health problems in general.

Mcdonalds make people aware of the amount of fat in everything, - back of the tray liners. At the end of the day, people know what's in the food, and what it's doing to their health, and to be honest, if they're stupid enough to eat their as often as they do, it's their own fault, just let them be fat and ill, There's no point going all neo-nazi and limiting people, we live in a free world, and people shouldn't be restricted just because something is bad for you. Look at smoking, all the health warnings are there, but people are still going to smoke regardless.
