Takes more skill to play with a ball at your feet than with a ball in hand. Also, I would use sloppy to describe the way American football players throw themselves at each other.

It doesn't take more skill to play one sport over another. You can become equally great at anything.

No, there are people that can't play good football (soccer), no matter how much they try.

I absolutely suck at golf. Are you telling me that I can never become a decent golf player, no matter how hard I try?

Yup and, if there's one thing Waterboy has taught me, it's that to be good at American Football, you just need to hit people hard whilst screaming.

so soccer is better than real football, b/c of it's fans? swing and a miss. I don't even know how a soccer game is played. I never understood the fascination with it. Now football may seem mindless on the outside. But there are so many plays and routes and steps you need to know. In soccer, you really don't think about getting dove on by a 300 pound lineman. Real football is so much more demanding

I think football is way better than american football. In fact, I can't stand the NFL or college football. I just hate it, i think it's stupid.

As for the atmosphere of the fans, football wins hands down. Mexico fans are somewhat crazy, but the real craziness is in South American with Brazil and Argentina.

You don't need a lot of skills to play golf? From my experience, it's the most challenging sport to get into, by far.

My point is, no game is more "skilled" than another. You can always become more skilled at any sport you choose to play. There is no set limit. I don't even know why this came up. I never said professional soccer players weren't highly skilled. I said the nature of the sport is sloppy.

Well, I guess you've never played at a competitive football (soccer) league.

And it's virtually impossible for one random person who sucks at football to play or to become more skilled than, for example, Diego Maradona (one of the best and most skilled football players in history).

This is based puerly on match atmosphere.

He didn't mention anything about routes, plays, 300lbs linemen.. but he did mention match atmosphere, hence the topic being "match atmosphere" and not 300lbs linemen.

[QUOTE="DJ_Novakain"]Im not sure if that is such a good thing. Ive heard of quite a few soccer related murders, not so much for other sports... 6_volts

That is true

But there was the poor guy who wore the UT shirt in Oklahoma and got castrated and beat to an inch of his life for it.

All sports have scary fanatics.

And no one can say which has a greater feeling, because honestly, I'd be bored with soccer(a sport where it's possible to end the game in a tie? really?) and many soccer fans would be bored with American Football(too complicated I guess).

You don't need goals for a football (soccer) game to be a good one...

[QUOTE="H8sMikeMoore"]if american football players didnt wear pads we would have the potential for a fatality on every play.

i mean, take a rugby player and have him stand there and have patrick willis running at him full speed directly at his rib cage from 50 yards away. People who hate football and want to argue about it will ignore what I just said.No pads for willis either.

Oleg_Huzwog

I think it's arguable that the reason they hit so hard is because of the pads, rather than the reason they wear pads is because they hit so hard. Wearing all that armor gives people a false sense of security and encourages riskier actions.

umm...no. Play no pads backyard football with a ( any skill level ) football player and they still play physical. Thats what football's all about.

if you add professional competitiveness to it with no pads youre gonna get the same thing.

actually the nfl (even though theyres pads) has unwritten rules about how to hit each other because its almost garunteed youre gonna be injured pretty severely. Tom Brady just go put down for the seaso because the guy who sacked him hit too low. I strongly believe football to be the most physically demanding sport, rough and strategic.

That being said, I dont think running for 90 minutes is that physically demanding, especially if youre used to it.

its not sloppy at all, every aspect of "throwball" is planned. If theres one thing you cant say about american football is that its sloppy. The game is the most strategic sport there is. And the skill argument is highly debatable. Theres a lot more to american football than there is soccer, and I cant imagine you saying otherwise if you ever watched a game.

You are speaking in soccer jargon. but by different leagues do you mean high school, Division 1, College, Pro. And no, canada plays football a bit. All i'm saying is football is more phisically demanding and takes players with skill. Soccer takes a great amount of skill i have no doubt, but it seems more "go for it" than having to memorize specific plays.

im talking about in comparison. I wasnt trying to say its not physically demanding at all. The more you run the better you get at it and the longer you can endure. I do think football is much more physically demanding than soccer. You use more of your body, and I would like to see who burns more calories. but unfotunately since theres more to football its hard to say.

Except you're wrong. There are choreographed plays in soccer, and the overall team is choreographed with each other--especially the defense.
Without a perfectly balanced defense with every player doing what he is supposed to do, you're going to have holes.
Go watch some Italian football; they have some very crazy defenses.

Fair enough. I'd also like to see a study done on this. The results would be rather interesting.

Takes more skill to play with a ball at your feet than with a ball in hand. Also, I would use sloppy to describe the way American football players throw themselves at each other.

its not sloppy at all, every aspect of "throwball" is planned. If theres one thing you cant say about american football is that its sloppy. The game is the most strategic sport there is. And the skill argument is highly debatable. Theres a lot more to american football than there is soccer, and I cant imagine you saying otherwise if you ever watched a game.

Explain, what skills do you need for American football?

depends on your position. A quarterback has not only all the pressure before the snap, but he has to have the ability to know what he has to do with the ball, when, and to trust his offensive linemen to not let eleven guys swarm him to the ground.

Defensive positions require that you make split second decisions based on where the play is moving b/c they pretty much guess.

Not to mention the fact that someone on the field has to sprint the ball at some point, that may be after thay catch it from 60 yards away.

Don't assume football is mindless hitting. It's more like intense chess. You need to move you "pieces" and plan three steps ahead, all the while trying not to be stomped into the dirt.

so soccer is better than real football, b/c of it's fans? swing and a miss. I don't even know how a soccer game is played. I never understood the fascination with it. Now football may seem mindless on the outside. But there are so many plays and routes and steps you need to know. In soccer, you really don't think about getting dove on by a 300 pound lineman. Real football is so much more demanding

DeeJayInphinity

 "Swing and a miss." We're not discussing which sport is better, we're discussing the atmosphere the fans can create.

Topic: Football (soccer) > Thwoball? (American Football)

excuse me for misunderstanding. A misleading title and i thought the original post was the rationalization for the topic title.

This is based puerly on match atmosphere.

muff07

He didn't mention anything about routes, plays, 300lbs linemen.. but he did mention match atmosphere, hence the topic being "match atmosphere" and not 300lbs linemen.

I guess i didn't see the second quote. You got me with my pants down thar.

not to mention if the defense thinks the offense is going to run and theyre going to pass they have to either call an audible or when the ball is snapped they have to adjust everything as they go, which can be very hectic. I wsa never a defensive player myself but that must be stressful

Soccer wins

why cause they have soccer moms and they are all crazy

leonard88

But hockey moms are pigs with lipstick.

OMG POLITICAL WARFAR BEGINZ NAO!!!!

Anyway, I'm still amazed at how much soccer players run in one match. It easily outdos American football in that category. As for atmosphere, never been to a football or American football game, so I can't comment on that.

thats a lot of explaining. You could honestly write a book about it. I suggest going a google search or even looking on wikipedia for football positions.

Again, thanks for your opinion...

instead of a condescending thanks, explain how soccer is more demanding and sway me.

Ok, do any of your "real football" players play in different leagues? or play for their country?, I know you're going to say "But only USA plays 'real football'", well then how many matches does your favorite "real football" team plays in a week? in a month?

You are speaking in soccer jargon. but by different leagues do you mean high school, Division 1, College, Pro. And no, canada plays football a bit. All i'm saying is football is more phisically demanding and takes players with skill. Soccer takes a great amount of skill i have no doubt, but it seems more "go for it" than having to memorize specific plays.

But you never answered my question.

they practice their ***es off mon-fri. They put in their final adjustments on saturday, and theyre set to play on sunday.

[QUOTE="famicommander"]Pfft. You don't know atmosphere until you've been to a college football game in the South. 100,000 people in the stands, and just as many grilling in the parking lot. You'd understand if you had ever been to the old Mile High Stadium, in the South Stands. It's where the regular guys sat, and the entire bleachers would literally quake. You'd have thought the whole stadium was coming down.Katafran

Or any Texas A&M Versus University of Texas game. Jeezus. They go absolutely nuts.

God, Texas is ridiculous about "throwball". Even at our High School games a few thousand people would come and watch. They were some insane times.

I prefer futebol too, one of the best sports to watch on tv simply because of the lack of commercials. Can be lame to watch when it's just falta falta falta falta though. I like American football too, but it's generally less fun to watch -- the recent chargers vs broncos game was pretty good though.

Yup, I agree completely. I can never understand the people who say football is mindless hitting. There's so much work that goes into reading plays, making adjustments etc.

It wasnt supposed to be funny. It was a facepalm for how dumb you sounded.

I could also say at the same time "what do soccer players do? run around for 90 minutes?"

But I wont say or agree with that, because soccer is a fun sport too, and is a lot more than that.

you sit here, and diss american football, while you've never watched it or been to an american football game.

I prefer soccer over football, but the latter can sometimes be very entertaining.
