For those of you with experience or interest in stand-up comedy. Help

Well I've spent the summer writing material for stand-up comedy, because I've really wanted to try it and I think I could be good if I tried and bit the bullet a few times.

But I have a question about explicitness.

My jokes are all pretty riddled with cussing, ignorance, sexual references, and strong sarcasm. That's the kind of comedy I enjoy and that's the sort of person that I project when being funny. (However untrue the things I say may be)

I'm getting some of my best (in my opinion) material together for my first open mic night, and I'm wondering how open to filth is the comedy world?

I know that Louis C.K., Doug Stanhope, and many many others are doing well with it, but they're all pretty secure in their careers.

Would it hinder my career potential if my style is raw?

Its all about trial and error in these cases. Not every stand up has the same audience.

Also, no matter how funny your material is, delivery is key.

I agree with Oakfront. You can make anything sound funny if you deliver it properly.

Most comedians aren't successful after their first gig, it normally takes years for them to get into it and start getting known. Just try whatever you think is funny and change it about as you go on to other gigs and stuff :)

Depends on the audience. Though if you want a career in stand up you might consider some jokes that are for a broader audience.LJS9502_basic

they are called hecklers, and there will always be that one guy or girl who will shout out a mindless attack at you. As if they have the right. You counter it with another joke directing itat thathim/her. Deal with them, its you show. heres an example (Warning: Language). Above all, if you add character into every joke regardless to whom it is directed to, It will work :D

What comedians would you compare yourself to? Frankie Boyle sounds like your type of style. Basically if you're going to do all your normal stuff with the innnuendo and language and all that, be fearless. Here's a link for you. Warning, it may offend.
