Haven't you heard there's a chance that the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxies will smash into each other sooner or later.

Buck_Hotep

I also learned this in science, that when to galaxies collide, they just pass right through eachother. So pretty much, there is no worry form it.

Tell that to the two galaxies about to go head-to-head.

it will pass clean through. But if any planets happen to fall in front of other planets, there may be a slight problem.

Scientists have marked out the path of one galaxie and our own, and they collided, and absolutely nothing happened, except for the fact that it passed right through us, and that we were unharmed. All is well after the incident.

it doesn't matter, in 3.5 million years, we'll have interstellar travel, or be gone. whatever race hits interstellar travel becomes truly invincible, and eradication becomes impossible.

I doubt we will ever develope such technology.. This isn't a sci-fi movie, the fastest thing we know, light, is actually extremely slow when you compare the vast distances you have ot cover to reach the next system.

You'd be amazed at what these humans can acheive. William Shatner thought of Star Trek, with all the replicator crap, and the warp stuff, and the warp drive and what not.

Who knows? Humans may even develope the technology in the near distant future. Lol, Oxymoron much in there.

Haha, damn... That would be something to see. Just imagining the kind of energy that type of collision would create is mind boggling.

...We are going to have like 5 death stars protecting earth by then, ever see what they do to planets? Even the sun will shrink back down after it sees the mightiness of earth.

i'm sorry, did you just make a post about a 0.04 chance of our death in 3.5 billion years? PHEWWWW man I can finally sleep. I was afraid for my 3.5billionth birthday, I was just gonna get a big doom planet instead of cake. Thanks so much for the heads up, I can now live my life.

I lol'd hard at that. Made my day.

I try ;)

You can read the full story here.

The basic gist of it all is that there's a slight chance (1 in 2500) that in 3.5 billion years the planets' orbits are going to spazz out and Earth will end up crashing into either Venus or Mars. All I have to say about that is that is the most kickass apocolypse scenario ever. Screw asteroids, now we can all die by watching a ****ing planet collide into us. What makes it even cooler is that the competing gravity fields would rip each planet apart before they even crashed. So basically we'd all die by falling up into the sky, getting stuck halfway into space, and then getting squashed when the two planets finally meet head-on.

Now for those who still want to live, you may be interested to know that apparently this is all Mercury's fault as it's the first planet in every simulation to go haywire, eventually screwing up Jupiter's orbit which in turn messes with all the inner planets' orbits. So, if we want Earth to survive then Mercury must die. I mean, would anybody even miss it? Would you miss it?

gameguy6700

I think that by getting rid of it would just be like it did something in the first place. If you got rid of it then it would not have anything to keep it from messing up Jupiters orbit. It's like messing with time, do one thing and it screws the whole time stream up.

So, I think we should just wait for it and die peacefully.

Where can I get front row seats?

the climate change issue overshadows this catastrophic prediction. i'm more concerned about what's going to happen to us in the next century.

I thought the sun would be a white dwarf or something by then any way, maybe a red giant

Sonir77

The sun is too small to become a red giant, so (unfortunately) no supernova when it buns out in 5 billion years.

But if I was going to die, this how I would want it to happen.

Uh, not really. Space isn't empty between galaxies. There is tons of dust and other particles that would cause friction, which would then cause shockwaves which would then trigger star formations. That alone is hardly "just passing right through". Also if two like size galaxies collide then they would merge into one larger galaxy, and if a larger and smaller galaxy collide then the larger galaxy through its larger gravitational pull would essentially consume the smaller galaxy and add it to its own size.

This isn't "nothing". A collision between galaxies radically alters each galaxy (unless the one galaxy is a huge galaxy and the other a dwarf, then the huge galaxy goes through it pretty much unchanged)
