... the suspect is a Saudi prince.

It started when a neighbor called police after hearing cries for help and seeing a bloodied woman desperately trying to escape over the wall of a Beverly Hills mansion belonging to Saudi Prince Majed Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

And it ended abruptly when charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and coerced oral copulation were dropped because---notwithstanding the bloody woman and the testimony of at least two other witnesses---prosecutors "didn't have enough evidence".

Full Story (BBC News)

It just goes to show: In the US, dollars can buy you judicial leniency. But Petrodollars can buy you total judicial impunity.

what are you going to believe? evidence and eyewitness testimony or money?

they knew better than to bother going after him because the state department would be down there to spring him in half an hour.

That could be the case... and it could also be the case that there actually isn't enough evidence. These things are hard to prove but we have innocent until proven guilty for a reason.

"Innocent until proven guilty" indeed! That may be the ideal, but "guilty until proven wealthy" is closer to the de facto standard for crimes of a sexual nature.

They thought (or so they say) that he had diplomatic immunity (I say bullshit, they probably took a stack of cash under the table, dirty pigs).

I call bullshit because if that were true they have the right to be produced evidence if that were the case and nothing I've heard since has indicated he provided false evidence.

Anyhow, not surprising. Ever heard how LA has jails for special privileged people, pay $130/day and you get the privilege to come and go from jail as you please, get your own TV, mini-fridge, internet use, it's a hotel basically, even cheaper. Even if they didn't "let him go" or "let him walk free", they still would have considered him in their custody on the honor system that he return for curfew.

This is a rather poor write-up of the story from BBC.

Why are we immediately taking the woman's side? Why are we assuming bribery already? No one else finds it fishy that all of a sudden 2 days later 3 Women are suing?

And why is every negative U.S. Thread always a bbc article?

It is not common knowledge as such, but in the UK Arabs behaving badly is nothing new. Just highlights the whole hypocrisy of them, considering what would happen to a Brit abroad.

Yep. No doubt a deal of some sorts is being sorted out. Political leverage is always there with these cases. It was a silly thing to do though. Saudi is fanatical about these things, where some of the others in the region are less so.

That's saudi arabia for you! The saudi princes love their orgies, their European or American prostitutes, their alcohol, but will turn around and act like they're all about Islam with laws from the freaking dark ages. Bunch of scumbags.

I can't comprehend how people with egregiously conflicting thought and deed reconcile the dissonance, be it the rapey Saudi prince, the molesting Catholic priest, or the gay pastor.

Is it?

We have Ryan voting against any sort of leave/support for family, while at the same time complaining about his own situation with his family and kids and taking time off.
Clinton is getting grilled about email servers, while Republicans are being found to do the same thing, except worse (because they use theirs for official congressional business).
Saudi Arabia is head of the UN's Human Right's section (or something like that) and is crucifying and beheading people (also other draconic measures daily) and, oh yeah, one of their royalty allegedly beat and raped women.

This is all from the past week, mind you; I'm sure we could go back a month and find a hundred examples. I'd say massive, blatant hypocrisy is, sadly, standard now for anyone in the political realm, at least at the national level.

I wish I could be surprised by this, but I'm not. And that saddens the shit out of me.

At first I've actually had some bad feelings about Hillary Clinton, and getting the intuition that I shouldn't vote for her, I think this confirms Hillary is not getting my vote, and I don't think she should become president.

Better yet, it's not up to the president to decide America's allies; this is a complex and strategic geopolitical matter that's left to the country's institutions.

Do you actually mean to say that Hilary support the institutionalized misogyny in Saudi Arabia? When did she do that?
