My mother and grandmother watch Fox News all the time. They especially enjoy Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck and Hannity.

Anyway, I asked my mother why Fox News labeled themselves as fair and balanced, and she said it was because they showed multiple points of view. She also mentioned that Fox News reports on what others are too afraid to acknowledge, and that their ratings are proof.

Now, I think Fox News, excluding Glenn Beck and Hannity, is more "fair and balanced" than MSNBC, which is so liberal that it is almost fanatical, but it still seems to be conservative with a conservative agenda. CNN seems to be somewhat moderate. Anyway, I get most of my news from iGoogle, which I have set up to show the latest headlines from all of the major news media outlets including the BBC.

What do you all think?

I think Fox News is incredibly biased as is MSNBC. Honestly I think most American news is crap. Instead of reporting the news they interpret it and present their views as fact. Like you I rely on the BBC and try to get news from a variety of sources.

The only balance it has is when you take what you hear on Fox News and compare it to what MSNBC and the real news is somewhere in the middle of that.

I'm conservative, and Fox News has a conservative flavor, so I like it.

I imagine liberals prefer MSNBC, which seems to have a liberal flavor.

So, it depends on what your political leanings are.

I live in Australia and I've seen plenty of Youtube clips of Fox news. Reporting like that would be illegal here... it's unbelievable. News reporters aren't allowed to express their opinions, they just report the news - they don't sit and talk about it as seems to happen on Fox, it's just reported in a relatively neutral and unbiased way, and that's that.

I can't believe they were calling a man EVIL for telling children they were special and making them feel good about themselves. That's about as mentally insane as you can get.

No Fox is very biased and it is a serious problem. Because it means other media groups who favor a little more liberal slant try to compete by being ultra liberal with their bias. Giving the average person two choices, an incorrecot ultra right wing fascist pov, or an ultra left wing commie point of view. The media should always strive to be impartial, worst case it should be swinging between left of center and right of center.

I have always been under the impression that most people who care to formulate their own opinions and views realize that FOX NEWS is biased and presents the news with a conservative slant. In most of my journalism classes, FOX is usually the 1st example used when discussing biasness, not using objectivity, and framing stories to portray certain viewpoints.

People do a lot of equivication with Fox and MSNBC, but there is a distinct difference: MSNBC, no matter how liberal, presents ACCURATE stories; Fox, on the other hand, misinforms and propogates distinct messages of fear (such as their saturation of the New Black Panther story, which amounts to 2 people. it is not a movement), uncertainty (spending is ruining the country, the question is where were all these fiscal conservatives when the Republicans had control?), and doubt (the dollar will fail, buy gold and 'food insurance'). There's also the hypocrisy, calling for small government (DADT, same-sex marriage, anti-choice issues INJECT government into privatedecisions)and fiscal conservatism (calling for an extension of the Bush Era Tax Cuts for the riches Americans without trying to pay for it) that many of it's pundits stake claims on.

VendettaRed07

Can you tell me the liberal stations that photoshop the pictures of republicans or conservatives to make them look threatening, accidently put "R" infront of a democrat politicians name if they do something bad, lower or mute out applause at Palin rallies, and cut away footage of democrat rallies to bigger rallies to make them look bigger?

And CNN is not liberal biased. People who think that simply want a station that is conservative biased, not fair.

Turtlecream

The ratings argument doesn't make sense.

FOX's ratings are so high because it fills a niche and it is the only one filling that niche whereas the more liberal leaning networks cannibalize eachother. FOX has the conservative audience all for itself whereas the more left-leaning networks have to compete with each other.

Also, (though this is conjecture) liberals may simply not be as interested in MSNBC punditry as conservatives are interesting in FOX punditry.

Third of all, MSNBC is the way it is because they tried to apply a liberal POV to the 'sensationalist ultra ideologically-flavored Fox model'. Only MSNBC sucks at it. MSNBC didn't use to be the way it is now.

Also, FOX is highly sensationalist, which always attracts viewers.

The notion that fair and balanced=higher ratings=laughable.

Don't they have a new slogan like "looking forward" or something?

Anyways, I noticed something funny today, Fox was adamant that the President and Stewart were too nonchalant yesterday, while MSNBC thought Stewart was being too unfair with his questioning.

That must mean the Daily Show is fair and balanced.

I can't stand any news media, but to be fair, Fox News is the only conservative outlet out there in the vast sea of liberal media, so there is a sense of "balance" among everything else. I'd rather get news from NPR or my local news.

They don't balance anything out. They tip the scales and then some. They do nothing but harm the average American and make it difficult for conservatives/republicans to be taken seriously or get their point across. Essentially they are the Palin to the McCain campaign. They do nothing other than hinder the progress of the party. MSNBC is the same, but from a liberal point of view. Both networks should be ashamed and in any decent country they'd have been shut down or boo'd into going bankrupt. But because people are not only idiots, but impressionable, they always have a captive audience. Fox and MSNBC are robbing America of intelligence, in a time when Americans really need fair news.

That doesn't make any sense. Something being balanced is not subjective. How would it depend on the viewer's political philosophies if Fox News was balanced? Name 1 Fox News personality, or rather, host that voted for any democrat, ever.

There do seem to be many unaware psychos watching Fox. Why the hell else would there Survival Seed Bank commercials and multiple gold buying scam advertisements? Are there really enough crazies(idiots) watching to actually create business for those advertisers?

You can tell a lot about viewers by what's advertised. Watching cartoons at 3AM on Comedy Central? I'm sure your going to hear steel drums and a Girls Gone Wild advertisement. Watching some random golf event? A ton of financial firms trying to sell advising services to rich country club members. Like watching a crazy bastard tell you about the death of America? Buy some seeds in case the world ends due to socialist Muslims, because non-hybrid seeds are worth more than gold in a non-economic disaster.
