I personally prefer holding a book, but I'm getting one for my mom. Let me know your thoughts.

Kindle 3 -- I'm leaning toward this one, especially for the price.

Nook

Sony

Other

Edit: Fixed a typo

I have the ectaco jetbook lite. It works great with pdfs and txt files as it doesn't have to resize them. It may take AA batteries but that bulge from the battery area is a great area to hold the ereader. Has an awesome page turner on the left side where you hold it. It is compatable with the Barnes and Noble NookBook library so book availability isn't really a problem. It doesn't have the extra features of the kindle or nook but if I want to use the internet I will use my laptop anyway. I use some rechargable Rayovac batteries. I get about 20 hours of reading time. I have yet to test the standby time though I have left it in standby for 35 days at the longest and it still fired right up and had 3 out of 5 bars of battery left.

I don't like the kindle as it does not work with epubs so you can throw out ever checking out books from a library. I honestly would say get either a refurbished nook or a jetbook lite with an sd card.

Im using the kindle app on my iPod touch and even I am shocked by what I am about to say but I actually prefer it to a book :o. That said Apple have exceed themselves in greed and are now demanding 30% of all sales via the App so Im not sure where it stands at the moment :(.

What are the Nook advantages?

You can buy books from multiple stores, not just the B&N one, and you also have ePub compatibility, which lets you check out books from public libraries (this format is fast becoming an eBook standard as well, think of ePub to eBooks as MP3 is to music, and Kindle can't use it). There's also a LendMe feature that lets you let someone else with a nook "borrow" your book for a set amount of time, and once the time is up, it deletes itself from your nook and puts it back on theirs. Also, the bottom part is a full-color touch screen, which is one of those things where your mileage may vary. There's about 1.8 million free books in the nook store as well. There's also the nook Color, which has an LCD screen instead of e-ink, but there you're starting to move into tablet territory, as it lets you read magazines, newspapers, Word documents, and an Android market that's supposed to be opening up soon (all nooks are Android-based, though the Color is more of a reading-focused tablet). That one's going to run you $250.

So would you avoid the Nook color for an ereader? You should probably just getan iPad if you are going to do that, right?

I need to read a little more about the Nook. Can you just buy it at a Barned and Noble? That certainly makes it easier too.

Actually, on my budget the nook color is the only one I could even consider, since the price on an iPad is so flippin' high. And yeah, just go to any Barnes and Noble. They have nook areas in each store to let you try them out.

I recommend the Kindle -- I've never had issues with mine, its battery lasts a month, and its very comfortable to use. I know the iPad isn't an e-reader and that some people use it to read, but I'm going to recommend this now: do NOT get the iPad if you want to use it as a reading tool. It's heavy, the backlight tires your eyes in dark environments and you absolutely can't use it if you're exposed to light.

I hate e readers, there are books that might to be left behind in the movement, perhaps graphic novels, the Halo books perhaps, there a little known books based on the Myst series that I find based on the little I have read so far are actually quite good that will most definatly never make it to e reader form.

You can get it at Barnes and Noble. The question you should ask yourself is, will your mom be reading it inside or outside? The color will have glare because of the screen technology. The non-color version uses e-ink so glare isn't really an issue. That is the problem with the jetbook I recommended earlier is that it has an LCD screen, so theoretically it should be reflective. I just haven't had that problem yet. I find the kindle to be obsolete because it can't read ePub as that is without question the standard.

I personally think the Kindle is far too limited on formats and such. If you're strictly looking for reading functionality, I would go with the Nook.

I have an ipod touch, and I use Good Reader. It is an amazing app since you can get the e-books from.. anywhere. I only do that for books I already own.. it's just a pain in the ass to lug them around sometimes.

My Samsung Galaxy S Captivate with ThinkFree Office. After getting my new phone, I have absolutely no need for an e-reader. Not only can I use eBooks on it, but can write .docx documents, download .pdfs and access the full internet.

And it only cost me $100 (on my three year contract through hardware upgrade).

I like the smell of a new book too, and the sound of the pages turning.

I hate the smell of new books. I looove the smell of old books. 100-250 years is best.

Is the school you work at considering getting e-readers for the students and storing the text books in there because it would be cool if schools started doing that.

easy on the eyes doesn't make up for lack of compatible formats.
