Now, I know the first response from rap fans is going to be Britney Spears or Heavy Metal makes whites look bad. I agree with that to an extent. But, Britney Spears or Heavy Metal stars don't mention thier whiteness in almost every other song, so there's not really a big correllation there.

So, my question is why would people buy and listen to something that makes the black race look like terrible poeple?

i didnt know metal makes whites look bad. i guess crap like pantera could make us look bad, but that is just trailer park metal. but yeah gangsta rap does make blacks look bad, because the lyrics are unintelligent / bragging about stupid things and degrading women.

Ok there have been a few, but I don't recall him or the Beastie Boys intentionally trying to drag all white people through the mud.

because there are tfour general types of people who buy "gangsta rap," if thats the term you want to apply to the genre in question.

1. People born in the actual hood, who connect to the themes and struggles represented by true to roots gangsta rap.
2. People born outside of the hood in residential areas, but feel they need to prove themselves to their culture.
3. White/Non-african people looking for rebellion
4. And of course, people just looking for a good listen who aren't really considering a sociopolitic or socioeconomic viewpoint or value.

Of course, you also need to clarify what you consider "gangsta rap." Gangsta Rap is a genre that is meant to be gritty, urban, and violent.

A good example of this is NWA or groups like them. Modern contemporary rap (i.e. Lil' Wayne, T.I., Kanye) may have some similar themes such as violence and drugs, but these artists are not a part of this genre and are instead a subgenre.
Think of it like Rock -> Alternative ---or--- Metal -> Black Metal

Where's a facepalm emoticon when you need it...

Not all blacks agree with disrespecting women and shooting cops, in fact I'd say that very few of them agree with it. The person who disrespects women and hates cops has a much bigger problem than listening gangster rap music, if you could even call that a problem.

I was reading between the lines. In order for the music to make blacks look bad, they would have to be influenced by it.

you can tell that the african americans as a race are trying to get rap stars to stop saying the N word
so in terms the black people that are rapping are making THEMSLEVES look bad
but to the rest of the black community no

I miss the old late 80's/early 90's "clean" rap scene (MC Hammer, Will Smith... etc). It's thought of as cheesy nowadays but it's got that undeniable quality especially if you grew up during those days.

Why would someone? Unless they get some thrill out of things that blacks look bad. I prefer to view people as they really are and get no kick out of people degrading thier race for profit. On top of the negative effect it has, I had discussed in my other thread, encouraging fearmongering in society.

TC are you black? Do you really care? Do you really have the need to waste your breath and energy on strongly disliking gangster rap? Is this thread necessary?

I'm black, but I don't like all rap.

Honestly, I don't think it makes African Americans look bad. Do white rappers make white people look bad? Do pop singers make all listeners look bad?

Why must people pull race into things we try to enjoy? It's stupid because race doesn't even exist.

Yes I do care. Not, just about black people or myself, but society in general. Is that so hard to believe? And, I disagree about that we shouldn't put race in things. Race shouldn't be bad word. Who was it again making race a bad word? Probably rappers had something to do with it and you did your part. I encourage all races, colors, or peoples to celebrate thier uniqueness and diversity, Not, drag themsleves and thier image down in the mud, like the rappers do.

I said nothing about it being a bad word. I'm saying that race shouldn't be pulled into everything that people try to enjoy. I mean, it's a waste of time basing everything on race, because it's non-existant. I could care less about diversity. What we should care about is how people are discriminated because of diversity.

I think we get your point that you don't like rap at all. And everything isn't rap's fault. Think of other problems in life. Society does it's acts because of influence. Not all of it is rap.

I couldn't disagree more. We should celebrate our diversity wholeheartedly and with PRIDE, not degradation. And, who bases "EVERYTHING" on race, I certainly don't. Really it just sounds like an attempt to defend the real horrid racism of rap (I've heard it compared to the black face shows of olden days), by flailing around descrimination claims. So, what's more important to you? Celebrating diversity or celebrating hate and evil of rap? It sounds like the later is more important to you.

Neither. I don't care a about either one. I like some rap, because it really has something positive to make black people look good.

I couldn't disagree more, like you said. I don't know about you, but I respect your opinion.

I say let people be. If they want to show you their way of life, go ahead, look into it.

I really don't like people at all. One reason I'm anti-social. All people did to me was disrespect and look down upon me, just because of who I am. It's why I don't give a care in the world about diversity. We're all different. I love the color of my skin but I don't like at least 85% of all people. There are over 7 billion people in this world and there are plenty of other things to worry about besides diversity.

I can empathise with what you said there. Much of the world is more antisocial then it used it be though. These things can improve.IF more people do what I said. DO celebrate diversity and embrace your uniqueness. DONT celebrate evil and embrace that.

Hm. Maybe if more people stayed away from each other more often maybe then we wouldn't worry about such silly things that are bound to happen in life. :|

Well, that's exactly the wrong attitude. WE should never give up on makingour world a better place then the day before, and never a worse one.

jasonharris48

Pretty much.

TC is just calling all of rap "gangster rap" because he associates black people with gang activity and somewhere, deep down inside, he probably harbors some kind of small resentment towards them, hence this thread.

Rap doesn't make black people look bad - shallow ignorant people and people who criticize rap make black people look bad.

P.S. In all hip hop culture, there's just as many white people as there are black people.

I know it is and I'm disgusted by it. Britney Spears, Auguilara, and some others are all showing hip hop gangster rap influence. I detest evil in whatever form it's in, even in myself. But, I'm willing to go out of my way to not reflect the evil in this world about myself and encourage other to do the same or whatever they can.

Hip hop influence, so what? What makes it so evil?

Hip hop is a reflection of what goes on around someone. Gangster rap was born from the struggle that comes with living in the projects, it's not evil. When you write a song, you write about what you know, and that's what gangster rappers did.

The only thing wrong with this was their mental attitude - the fact that some of these rappers glorified their lifestyle. That's not evil, it's just twisted thinking. There is no such thing as good or evil, only influence and obedience.

This style of music has helped change the face of hip hop culture, but there's still good hip hop out there.

You just said "There is no such thing as good or evil". Do you even realize that's what you just said? And your previous statement was like saying "because you don't like evil, you must like evil" or something completely absurd.

I'm black, and no it doesn't

  • Gangster Rap is long dead, it died in the 90's after 2Pac died, and Snoop and Dre calmed down. Easy E died, and afterwards we got left with Eminem, Jay-Z, and others
  • Eminem is not gangster rap, since he doesn't really talk about gang related subjects, his raps range from political, drugs(mostly using), girls, his mom, and wild tangents of funny stuff. Not gangsta
  • Easy E, NWA, Ice Tea, Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, Too Short(early) Pac, Biggie, Gangsta rap
  • Gucci Mane, Plies, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, 40 Glocc, and many others of this rap era = not gangsta rap, they're drug rappers
  • Gucci Mane and his crew are clowns, most of the South are clowns AND THATS MY OPINION, only Ludacris, Lil Wayen(mostly early), Outkast, UGK, and a few others I really care about, Oh yeah I'm not gonna forget Killa Mike
  • N.W.A if you look back had positive messages, and at one point I believe they said don't take that **** seriously.

Like I said, 50, The Game, G Unit goons, South Goons, are not Gangsta rap. Gangsta rap died in the 90's, now you just have clowns

Some hip-hop fans can be hella dumb, they down other forms of music, and then they do what rappers say they do in songs, I doubt Jay-Z is robbing people anymore, and I doubt half of them are doing what they say, mostly the ones that made it, and YES even underground rappers. Rappers are simply story tellers, they tell it like a book, and if you take a book seriously do what it says you'll fin your self imitating wrong things.

I hate rap, despite the fact that I listen to hit, I remember Lupe Fiasco saying something along those lines in one of his songs, and many new "rappers" are saying "I'm not a rapper, I'm and artist" I think Kid Cudi said that, and other rappers who bash "The game" and seem like Anti-Rappers. Hip-Hop is still my first choice form of music. But yes I still hate it, I hate alternative rock also, but I still listent to it.

And another thing, think about your favorite rapper before you go downing other types of music, the Artist is smart the fan is too stupid to look outside the box. Most rappers are rock fans, alternative fan, heck even Pastor Troy made a tribute to Nirvana/Cobain. I hate it when my Hip-Hop drunk friends hates my rock collection and think that rock is funny, meaningless and satan worshipping. Not knowing that many of their favorite rappers pull influences from more than hip-hop.

Execept Lil Wayne, who's a poser, he claims to be into rock he just picks the average named rock bands, like AC/DC and such. Now Lil Jon, that guy is diverse in his taste, and he's real about it.

Dude, OMG! There are two different types of Gangsta rap, cheap imitation and real gangsta rap Real Gangsta rap coincides with real gangsta ethics, they were hard, they would **** you up, but they still had respect, that was dudes like Eazy, and the Chuck D and all of them, they were/are real respectful dudes, and they talked about black empowerment, and fighting the man. Similar to rock at a time, and some rock today Then there is Actor gangsta rap, disrespectful terrible disgraces like Gucci Mane and such, fake losers with no real message what so ever, and go around talking "Bricks" and the "Trap" in every rap the make. You must don't listen to a lot of good gangsta rap.

Nah just rich famous ones, i try to give it a chance and then they show up on Conan and what are the songs about? Sex, Snoop and 50 cent i'm talking about. Also it seems like every song has the same beat in the background and a bunch of extra singers/musicians who could be doing more than the actual "star" in the first place :|

Eh... you said what I wanted to say, but better.

Gangsta Rap does not make Black People look bad. they do it because of minority status and such, not because they're black. look at white people, i'm white, and white people are terrible, we are selfish, greedy monsters who steal land, destroy nature, we play god, we make war.... but i don't feel bad for being white, because i'm a good person. It matters who we are. not what we are. Besides, gangsta rap is nowhere near as bad as death metal, i'm not talking about quality, death metal/black metal just has an awful message

hmm. I agree with you to a point.. black culture in America is definately very very interesting. But lets not be confused.. they aren't actually a seperate race of people. they are just a different cultural group.

Seriously...he doesn't have to make multiple threads on it (actually with the ridiculous points he tries to make, he shouldn't have made one topic).

Everyone has different tastes in music. If an album is good people will listen no matter what genre it is. What makes black people look bad isnt the music but the way people representing the culture behave, both famous and none famous. If black folk on a whole acted more respectably both in real life on on reality shows then that would deal with the issue. The music has nothing to do with it.

Yeah and heavy metal about killing people, suicide, etc etc.. Makes white people look bad.. See what I did there? I find this topic quite racist, in suggesting that a certain genre of music holds the perceptions of the entire black community.. The problem is not the gangster rap, the problem is you for stereotyping an entire demographic of people into it.
