Don't you hate when the bible gets slammed down your throats by your parents? In school? Does't it suck? As a matter of fact, I hate the fact that I have school slammed down my throat. I hate having to learn math, because clearly they are slamming it down my throat. Why do I have to listen to a teacher anyway? There just slamming stuff down my throat, You know what, lets just not listen to anybody, especially our elders, because all their doing is "slamming" their experience down our throats. When I listen to music, they are slamming it down my throat. When I watch the news, they are slamming their opinion down my throat. Hoeosexuals anybody? All that pride and flauting is just slamming it down my throat. Why do I even have to read? I never wanted to learn to read or write in the begining, so they should have no right slamming it down my throat.

Doesn't all of the above sound abslotely ridculous? So why do people claim they are getting the bible slammed down their throat? No one is forcing you to believe anything. They are teaching you, now its obivous up to you to accpet it or not. If you feel that the bible is getting slammed down your throat then voice your opionn. But if your going to debate something that is factually proven, (in terms of genology, history, geologically etc.) then your going to have to debate back with facts. If you just completely call somethimg garbage without researching, then obviously your intentions for disagreeing with said thing is not honest in your approach. Instead of going with mass opinion, (ahem socialism), be intelligent and come to your own conclusion. Don't be a follower, be a leader.

I guess I'm lucky, school was never that bad when it came to religion and my family are not religious in anyway. :)

I think it has to do with the rebellion as a teen against your superiors, but I do think that there are times when things, such as religion, school, etc are heavily pressured for certain people.

I can't quite picture how "slamming" anything down someone's throat would work, much less a thick book.

Whether or not you believe what the Bible has to say, people should still read the Bible, whether for religious or research purposes. If you want to criticize Christianity, you better know where Christians stand before making comments that can come off as ignorant.

Maybe I wasn't clear as the meaning to this thread. What I am saying is that, we have all at some point in our life have heard about God. Majority of people dismiss the bible as crap. Yet they have not put any research into what so ever. Basically what I am saying is, how can you dismiss something you don't understand? Wouldn't it be the intelligent thing to try to understand said subject, and then make a decision, instead of going with mass opinion? Wouldn't that be the way of the true intellect?

It goes down well with mashed potatoes and beans. Just coat it with vasoline and slide it down-- there's no slamming involved.

If someone claims that Fred went to the store and bought some candy, it's not an outlandish claim and thus does not need much to convince me that it could have happened. If someone claims that Fred rode around on a boat with two of every animal on the entire Earth then I'm probably going to require a little more than seeing it stated in a story compilation that has been somewhat arbitrarily claimed to be the "word of God." Incidentally, "mass opinion" is exactly the common basis of religious belief. Oh, the irony.

Polls disagree with that statement.

"PRINCETON, NJ -- About one-third of the American adult population believes the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally word for word. This percentage is slightly lower than several decades ago. The majority of those Americans who don't believe that the Bible is literally true believe that it is the inspired word of God but that not everything it in should be taken literally. About one in five Americans believe the Bible is an ancient book of "fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by man."

One is five is not a "majority", it is 20% which is a minority.

For you to assume something based on preconceptions is not wise. For you to research every historical account of said event, look up archeological findings, and THEN make a decision would be the intelligent thing to do.

[QUOTE="JJ_Productions"]Maybe I wasn't clear as the meaning to this thread. Wouldn't that be the way of the true intellect?Vandalvideo
So you're telling those who don't believer that they should be like believers, those who obviously have exhaustively studied the divine and have clear proof that something is the case?

I never said that, I said for you to dismiss something without researching it would not be intelligent.

Wow. This country is doomed. There are over 100 million Americans that take that collection of fables, legends, history and moral precepts literally?

If someone claims that Fred went to the store and bought some candy, it's not an outlandish claim and thus does not need much to convince me that it could have happened. If someone claims that Fred rode around on a boat with two of every animal on the entire Earth then I'm probably going to require a little more than seeing it stated in a story compilation that has been somewhat arbitrarily claimed to be the "word of God." Incidentally, "mass opinion" is exactly the common basis of religious belief. Oh, the irony.

For you to assume something based on preconceptions is not wise. For you to research every historical account of said event, look up archeological findings, and THEN make a decision would be the intelligent thing to do.

I assume I should give similar consideration to Ovid's Metamorphosis, the Enuma Elish, the Eddas, the Rid Vedas, the I Ching and every other text dealing with the supernatural?
