It's because what Polanski did happened over 30 years ago. Do you want them to make it the lead story on the news for over 30 years?

Plus, I'd argue that Mel Gibson is more famous than Polanski so that's another reason they'd talk about Gibson more.

Actually statutory rape with a 13 year old is pretty dirty on the grown ups part. That's messing with a young girl that isn't at a point where she is either experienced or knows how to handle the situation.
