Yeah, I hate when people put a bag or purse next to them on a full bus or train. Here, though, they generally get called out for it.

I give up my seats for women and the elderly. Sometimes a bit awkward though cause they usually try and find another seat when I'm about to give mine. Like they don't want my seat.

I hate when people use a seat for their items....they should charge them two fares. Anyway....I'd give up my seat were I to ride public transport...

It always happens on the buses here, and if someone doesn't give up their seat, someone else will call them out on it. I don't often see people putting their stuff on the seats next to them either.

Yeah, it certainly is disheartening whenever an elderly isn't offered a seat. What's worse is when someone hogs both their seats just so they can place their bags. :?

well... here goes *old lady stumbles in subway* *she looks around for seat, there is none* * we don't get up initially* * we are ashamed we didn't get up initially, so getting up now would draw attention to how we didn't get up initially* * looks around to see if anyone else gets up* * old lady holds on for dear life* * We put our ipods on and bury ourselves in our newspapers and try to look busy* * you make your to work/school and regret not getting up* * You go to starbucks on and drink your troubles away*

I agree that bags should not occupy seats if full. But one should not necessarily give their seats to the elderly. If a person is handicapped and the elderly was 'fit', I think the person seated has the right to remain seated.

I think federal law dictates that seats be made available for the handicapped and the elderly. Though it doesn't state which has preference. Either way, I doubt the bus is full of only handicapped and elderly people. There should be someone that can give up their seat.

Is it really hard to let an elderly person have a seat while a young fit individual stand?

I dont have a bus or train here... but I would surely give my seat to someone more in need of it then I. I went to a musical/community play thing actually this past Monday, my friend was rockin out in it and it was a food shelf donation raiser (they better likes their apple sauce!!)... Anyways to get to the point, there was an old gentleman who was using a cane who walked in late, and was standing in the back. I got up immediately and showed him to my seat. Standing doesnt bother me - as long as im not in heels.

I just hate it when someone in a wheelchair comes aboard, and the two aisles for the handicapped are staring at each other to see who moves out :?. Now that is inconsiderate! :x

And then you have to fight with the busses for position in the lane all the time :x I hate playing hop-scotch with the busses. I swear one of them is going to kill me one day.

Yes, lucky. They've been planning one here forever, but the county doesn't have any money, so they say it will be finished in about 8 years from now :(

Some old lady gave me attitude for this yesterday on my bus ride home from work. I had my head phones on and was reading something so I was looking down and didn't see her and when I finally saw her like 2 minutes after she got in I got up instantly and she was pissed at me and told me she didn't want my seat and had the nerve to put her hand on my shoulder and try to push me back down onto the seat. I kept being nice though and told her I get off in 2 stops and I moved out of her way and she sat down, but some of these elderly people really don't even deserve to sit. Me giving up my seat for you is due to courtesy. I'm not obligated to give you my seat although I usually will especially in the seat I was sitting in. I was near the back which is usually first come first serve old or young.

In a lot of states it's the law to give up your seat to an elderly or handicapped person. But only if you're sitting in the front seats that are designated for said people. I avoid those seats usually, so it's never come up, but I'd do it if I had to.

Yeah I give up my seat for elderly people when I see them get on the bus. But for really short trips (under 5 stops), I don't sit altogether because its just a hassle to find a seat at that point.

It's actually the law here to get up and give the elderly or disabled a seat on public transport. Failure to do so upon request is something like a $5,000 fine.

I often give up my seat for the elderly.

Why does no one do this anymore, i was on the bus this morning and it was jam packed, i was sat near front of the bus when some elderly women got on so i gave my seat to one of them and to my suprise no one else did, it was only until the bus driver said something that people gave way, whats even worse is the fact that i could see people who had handbags and shoppingon the seat next to them so no one would sit next to them, i dont think people realize we all get old one day and i hope in the future these people have to stand on a bus and see how they like it

Because you - like almost everyone else in modern western society - do not confront the individuals in question; calling them out on their poor behaviour, and choose to deal with the problematic at hand by going home and b****ing about it to the wife, friends or post about it on internet forums, as if that ever solved anything.

I use the seat next to me to put my items on, but I always remove them whenever someone wants to sit. I make eye contact with the person, and I'll see straight away if they want to be seated. And I always get up and offer my seat for the elderly.

Seems a little off base hah. Actually in regards to this particular topic, if someone doesn't give up their seat to an elderly person on a bus, I'd be surprised if someone didn't say something. I'd say that people are pretty confrontational, particularly in urban areas around here. I got yelled at by a lady just yesterday for throwing a receipt I had in my pocket into a trash can and missing it.

yea I call people on it as well. Actually, I just slowly turn my ass around and start to sit down on the BART train...that tends to get their purse and bags moved out of the way pretty fast.

I usually sit in the back. As the elderly board from the front and slowly shuffle their way back down the aisle, someone else always gives up their seat before they reach me.
