I have to read one for school, and I don't know which one to pick. On one hand, the shorter/easier to read choice would be great, but I'd much rather just read the novel that's better in general. So which is the better read?

Grapes of Wrath

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Grapes of Wrath makes me think of grapes turning against us in a plan of world domination . Perhaps poisoning some of themselves and dying for their cause by allowing themselves to be consumed .

I find The Grapes of Wrath to be the better novel and I find John Ford's film to be better than the novel...

You should get the book for yourself and others.

Never read either, but I'd suggest "Grapes of Wrath" as I loved "Of Mice and Men" (which was also a John Steinbeck novel). I think "Grapes of Wrath" is a lot longer though. EDIT: also, being as these are older books you should be able to get them at a used bookstore cheap, new published works these days are sooooo not worth it, even for the classics, like a new copy of either could go for upwards of $14-20, while older published versions you can maybe get for $2 at a used bookstore and maybe the previous owner didn't even bother to break it open.

Grapes of Wrath is easily the best American novel ever written. It will change how you view society, give you some insight to the horror of the Great Depression, and really just move you to tears.

I've never read Uncle Tom's Cabin, but The Grapes of Wrath is one of the best novels I've ever read.

As for the title, it's derived from the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' by Julia Ward Howe. There's a couple of lines in the song that go something like "My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord/He is stamping out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored".

I love reading, you know that; however, Uncle Tom's Cabin is the ONLY book I have ever decided not to finish because I did not like it at all. I got about half way through it, and decided it wasn't worth it. I used Cliff's Notes for the rest of it, because I did have to read it for school. I never read Grapes of Wrath, because I don't enjoy Steinbeck's dreary and depressing outlook on . . . pretty much everything. Flip a coin B. Lebbin.

Dreary and depressing? Not at all! His books do have a depressing element about them but they always end with a chance of future hope for their characters. Steinbeck was a master.

Grapes of Wrath is a great book. I think reading UTC would be more for historical purposes than actually reading a good book.
