[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="jaydough"] Indie isn't a genre. Not at all. NearTheEndThat doesn't stop bands from being called indie, does it? Just because it happens doesn't mean it's right. I've heard people say "ACDC is seriously awesome, brah!" tons of times, it doesn't mean they're right. That's an opinion. 'Indie' is widely used to describe a certain style of music. If you want to talk about the literal definition, use 'independent', not indie.
[QUOTE="Hey_Jay"]Broken Social Scene
Leslie Feist
Iron & Wine
Los Campesinos!
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Notwist
Stars
blackacidevil96
the notwist also wins. you should listen to 13 & god. its comprised of themselves and the notwist.
I agree. I now love The Notwist. Can't believe I never heard of them. I just listened to 13 & God now, and they're pretty good.[QUOTE="majoras_wrath"]
Holy F*** (another favorite) Witchsight
Okkervil River
Wax Mannequin (check out the album "The Price" if you can find it)
Immaculate Machine (start with "One's and zero's", but get "Transporter", too)
Dead Meadow
of Montreal's new album is pretty awesome.
If you want to pick my brain further, check out my Last Fm. Not all "Indie", but I'd recommend every song.
If (any of) you have Last, feel free to add me, I'll add you back .
I find the lack of Kaiser Chiefs in this thread... disturbing.Neon-TigerThey arn't Indie, they are signed to UMG. Being signed to UMG is basically the complete opposite of being Indie seeing as UMG is the largest major record label there is.

I'm listening to Wax Mannequin now, and I like them a lot. Some parts kind of remind me of The Blue October. I'll check the other bands out later and also probably your Last. Thanks. :)Okkervil River

your completely wrong ACTUALY![QUOTE="sAndroid17"][QUOTE="Forever_Changes"]If you think Indie simply refers to the label a band is on, you're completely wrong. Forever_Changes
said the member of " the shredders union"...
Yes, it takes its name from Independant which refers to the labels the bands are on, but it refers to the DIY ethics of the band. It's reflected in the way the band tours, records and distributes their music but also in their sound.
Read "Our Band Could Be Your Life". That will give you some insight into Indie Rock.
This book is basically my bible, and you're still wrong.[QUOTE="Forever_Changes"][QUOTE="sAndroid17"] your completely wrong ACTUALY!NearTheEnd

Keane is pop-rock, not indie. +1 for Modest Mouse though. My favorites:
Gloo64
- The Fashion
- Death Cab for Cutie
- Modest Mouse
- Keane

Don't try to pull the elitist thing with me, you're so out of your league it isn't even funny. "Indie" is no more of a genre than "mainstream." Please, tell me that bands like the Jesus Lizard and Wolf Eyes have something to do with Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend. You'd have to be kidding.Absolutely none of those bands are any good. "Indie" really isn't even a genre, it describes the kind of label the bands are on. NearTheEndExactly.
