Being an indie band is simply being a band on an Indepent Label, nothing more. Some losers think that because they have a new sound that is similar to some of the more prominant indie bands of the 90s, they are an indie band as well. Personally, I don't have a favorite indie band, I like bands like Scratch Acid, Black Flag, Angry Samoans, etc.

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="jaydough"] Indie isn't a genre. Not at all. NearTheEnd
That doesn't stop bands from being called indie, does it?

Just because it happens doesn't mean it's right. I've heard people say "ACDC is seriously awesome, brah!" tons of times, it doesn't mean they're right.

That's an opinion. 'Indie' is widely used to describe a certain style of music. If you want to talk about the literal definition, use 'independent', not indie.

The Mountain Goats are pretty amazing. No Children, especially.

The American Analog Set also makes some good music. This song is probably my favorite by them.

I LOVE No Children. Best "I hate you but I'm stuck with you" song.

Holy F*** (another favorite) Witchsight

CRAP. I had a chance to see them a few times and i skipped out. I just youtubed them and i feel pretty silly, i would have loved to go.

I saw them at Lolla and it was probably my favorite act besides Radiohead. Fantastic music, its completely indescribable how it felt to be in a sweaty mass of people trippin' out, dancing to that awesome music.

The album for the movie "Garden State" has a bunch of really great Indie tunes, the movie is awesomely great too so I recommend both. The Shins are great if you're just looking for a new band.

Okkervil River

Wax Mannequin (check out the album "The Price" if you can find it)

Immaculate Machine (start with "One's and zero's", but get "Transporter", too)

Dead Meadow

of Montreal's new album is pretty awesome.

If you want to pick my brain further, check out my Last Fm. Not all "Indie", but I'd recommend every song.

If (any of) you have Last, feel free to add me, I'll add you back .

They arn't Indie, they are signed to UMG. Being signed to UMG is basically the complete opposite of being Indie seeing as UMG is the largest major record label there is.

Indie DOES describe a sound now, as well as label status.

I'm listening to Wax Mannequin now, and I like them a lot. Some parts kind of remind me of The Blue October. I'll check the other bands out later and also probably your Last. Thanks. :)

[QUOTE="sAndroid17"][QUOTE="Forever_Changes"]If you think Indie simply refers to the label a band is on, you're completely wrong. Forever_Changes

your completely wrong ACTUALY!

said the member of " the shredders union"...

Yes, it takes its name from Independant which refers to the labels the bands are on, but it refers to the DIY ethics of the band. It's reflected in the way the band tours, records and distributes their music but also in their sound.

Read "Our Band Could Be Your Life". That will give you some insight into Indie Rock.

This book is basically my bible, and you're still wrong.

This is an unsigned, INDIE-pendent band, A'tris:

I like them to some extent.

nice argument, but I'm not wrong. Don't worry, you'll realise someday. You just don't know enough about indie.

These bands just scream indie:

The Wombats, The Cribs, Vampire Weekend and Switches.

Keane is pop-rock, not indie. +1 for Modest Mouse though.

Don't try to pull the elitist thing with me, you're so out of your league it isn't even funny. "Indie" is no more of a genre than "mainstream." Please, tell me that bands like the Jesus Lizard and Wolf Eyes have something to do with Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend. You'd have to be kidding.

Absolutely none of those bands are any good. "Indie" really isn't even a genre, it describes the kind of label the bands are on. NearTheEnd

Yeah I like Modest Mouse so I'll add them (some might not think they're so-called indie now, more alternative)
