It's pretty interesting to see some people add some really subjective picks on their lists a long with something like The Godfather. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that I couldn't picture comparing some of them and putting them in the same tier. Again, it's interesting how some people see quality.
The Passion of Joan of Arc Andrei Rublev The Seventh Seal Seven Samurai Winter Light Stalker Zerkalo Yi Yi The Spirit of the Beehive La Strada 8 1/2 The Elephant Man Fires on the Plain Nanook of the North Wild Strawberries High and Low The 400 Blows Le Samourai Army of Shadows Le Cercle Rouge Late Spring Criea Curveos Diabloique Once Upon a Time in America If..... I've seen quite a few of them and think most are great choices I'd agree with. Just Psycho sticks out, I don't think it's even Hitchcocks best and wouldn't consider it one of the GOATS. I wish I had more time to see some the rest of those movies on your list.

Psycho is my favorite Hitchcock because it's his most interesting character study and it's also a very daring film and as I said before I forgot quite a lot of films, like Casablanca, Rashomon, Battle of Aligers and Children of Paradise from your list...

I hear that a lot, I believe they had to explain the ending was because not many people would have catched on because no one has made a film like that. I could understand how that could someone off but I found the final frame and monologue by Bates after the explanation was great and I forgave it for it. :P[QUOTE="Jazz_Fan"][QUOTE="R0cky_Racc00n"] Have you seen all of those? This is a clip from the greatest film ever made. Anything else in this thread is terrible compared to this classic gem that you should all watch.
That is truly fascinating. If your looking for an "objective" or "consensous" list than I would very much suggest They Shoot Pictures Don't They Top 1000 which is a list put together from many critic and institutional lists. Also their top directors is very good as well. Keep in mind though that these are just great starting off points if you want to explore cinema, theres alot more out there.

[QUOTE="Jazz_Fan"]erine, I did have not heard of The Quince Tree of the Sun, but now that I know it's by the same Director of The Spirit of the Beehive I must track it down now...ernie1989
You won't have a problem with that.
Erine, I love you. :P I will watch it soon! The Thin Red Line. It's more of a meditation than a moving plot.kdawg88There is rumor going around that Criterion is going to release it on DVD and Blu-Ray, so their is a chance that they will release the hours of deleted scenes into the film, I have not seen it yet which is a shame because I love Malick with Badlands and Days of Heaven being some of my favorites.

What about The New World? Also I wonder if he will ever finish making Tree of life.
You know, there's already A LOT of threads, and a LOT of books, and a LOT of stuff online about this topic. I'm really tired of it.
But I will give 5 that I don't often mention.
Apocalypse Now (Coppola)
Aguirre: The Wrath of God (Herzog)
The Third Man (Reed)
Cries and Whispers (Bergman)
Ran (I think Kurosawa's best, but never mentioned as much as the others, Kurosawa himself said it was his best film)
I realize that, but OT has a lot of knowledgable people on film so I was wondering their consensus on it. And I think I made it specific that I was looking for the best in a kind of technical perspective, and I came away with a new, interesting perspective from this thread when I saw some of the films mentioned. I found out from this thread that the best movies are truely subjective, because people that have seen a large amount of great movies had interesting choices in their lists. I hope you see why I posted "yet another" one of these topics in OT.You know, there's already A LOT of threads, and a LOT of books, and a LOT of stuff online about this topic. I'm really tired of it.

[QUOTE="jpph"][QUOTE="Crimtmp"] Because its Bruce Lee, because its the first really great Martial Arts movie...which in case you havent seen many...they dont have great acting or great plots. Crimtmp
there are plent of great actors in rubbish films. it may have been the first, but it just isnt a great movie in it own respect. if it was released today, no one would look twice. you can bet they would at the godfather tho. i dont think a film can be called one of the greatest movies ever if it doesnt stand the test of time at all.
Well Drama is such a genre where if you release a flawless film then it will stand the test of time. Other genres are not like that, if Halloween were released today it would flop, if Jaws were released it would flop...I just dont think thats a fair argument.so you enjoy old films just cos they're old? i know you didnt say that exactly, but how can one possibly enjoy a film like enter the dragon after watching something like the bourne supremacy or die hard 4 or terminator 2? if there was no nostalgia involved, it wouldn't be enjoyable to most people i would think.
Ill just list a few that I consider amazing.
The Godfather (1 and 2)
The Great Dictator
Young Frankenstien
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Dog Day Afternoon
Platoon
Oldboy
City of God
Downfall
My Left Foot (pretty much anything with Daniel Day Lewis really)
Anything by Pixar
Scent of a Woman
Jaws
ET
Schindlers List (GAH I still need to see this)
Sofies Choice
Saving Private Ryan
Crimtmp
I agree with the bolded. :D
Some others I love...
Princess Mononoke
Alien
Aliens
Terminator and T2
Batman 89
It's a Wonderful Life
Star Wars: Original Trilogy
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Green Mile
All 2D Disney movies not named Pocahontas, Atlantis, or Home on the Range (Atlantis just sucked, and the other two were just decent at best)
And I gotta say it... Avatar *runs*
