[QUOTE="digi_matrix"]My favourites are Sonic Youth, Pixies, Interpol (post-punk), Smashing Pumpkins, and LCD Soundsystem (not really rock, but still "punk"), RATM, and of course Nirvana. LJS9502_basic

Oh I'm sorry, I was thinking "punk" could be acquited to "experimental". Which is far better IMO. :) So if you guys are on about "punk rock", yeah it's a very boring sub-genre. Sorry if I wasn't around the time of the Dead Kennedys or Sex Pistols, so I can't be all pretentious and give my thoughts on who are the greatest punk bands of all time. If you guys like HARDCORE PUNK, then you might've heard of The Gallows. Yeah, I think they're crap, with weak lyrics, just plain loud, no complexity to their sound. I think that's what Sex Pistols are also, but I actually like Sid Vicious' voice. Bah, punk rock is dumb, but my favourite punk band would be Blink 182, and they're definitely influential for their time and afterwards(song structure, some of the strumming patterns, etc.).Whoever mentioned Wire, they kick ass.
Here's my top 5:
1)The Minutemen
2)Jerry's Kids
3)Limp Wrist
4)Husker Du
5)The Electric Eels (If they count)

I would have to say The Ramones. They're punk, right? :DQuadrifoglio

I find that funny too.
Blink 182 was a joke, and not even a funny one. :|

Same here. I've to say most modern punk sounds the same between each other. Take Simple Plan and Blink182. They don't have their own identity.
Listen to Government Warning. :)

Yes, they released their debut last year.

That's what I meant. Not thinking straight. Too early in the morning.Yeah, I hear ya.I still think they made some OK music with Graves and the other "guest vocalists" but Jerry Only is pretty much Norman Bates with this thing now, it's creepy.

I can't pick one.
For me it's between Dead Kennedys, Misfits (Danzig era), The Dwarves and if we're venturing into the dreaded pop punk...The only pop punk band I ever liked...The Descendents.
So any punk fans....check out The Breakouts. Local (ish) punk band. These guys are good.

Somewhat misleading...the music was their own...and they were punk.

Yes...and they had the basis of the band before they met McLaren. He used them to sell merchandize....but had nothing to do with the music itself. He was a bit of a determent to the band as well.

I never said their music wasn't their own, but most people see punk as an image, and as far as punk images go, theirs was mostly superficial. I have their album, I know the words to the songs, I like the Pistols, but I don't share the same respect for them "starting punk" as a lot of folks do, that's all.

Apparently, they talk about this in their documentary, but I haven't seen it.

Comparing them to NSYNC is a bit much though. :( I don't know if theirs image was superficial or not...Rotten was definitely a jerk....and the other guys a bit socially inept.I believe what they said they meant. The Pistols were important to punk catching on...no publicity like bad publicity and this definitely helped the genre. They influenced other individuals to form bands and some of those bands are talented.
