Green Lantern - 21% on Rotten Tomatoes....

I know it's too early to tell, but a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes a couple days before Green Lantern's release definitely isn't a good sign. I had very high hopes for the film, and must admit that this was, embarassingly enough, my most anticipated/hyped movie of the summer. The reason for my high expectations wasn't just because of my prior fanhood of the comic books and the Green Lantern character, but mainly because a lot of the newer trailers (particularly the dazzling Wonder-Con 2011 footage) and the direction of Martin Campbell.

Now there are still two days left for Green Lantern to actually come out, so that's plenty of time for more reviews to flood in on RT's database. But any movie that receives this kind of critical drubbing prior to the release seldom has any massive upswings in reception. In most cases, superhero films tend to drop in their aggregate scores. For instance, X-Men: First Clas tarted off with a strong 100% with dozens of reviews, and not slowly dropped to an 86% by the film's release. Thor's early release in Australia showed plenty of critical praise and even a solid 96% on Rotten Tomatoes--which quickly fell to 77% by its American opening weekend.

Currently, Green Lantern has 28 reviews collected on Rotten Tomatoes, with a mere 6 being positive. Due to the large majority of negative reviews, perhaps there is a chance that many positive reviews are yet to come. But as shown before with previously hyped films, such low critical response ahead of a film's release with a decent number of reviews like Green Lantern has collected normally indicates a critically panned film is underway.

What do all of you think? Do you think there will be a massive flow of positive reviews coming Green Lantern's way, indicating hope for the currently dissenting Rotten Tomatoes score? Or do you think it will stay relatively this low? Are you disappointed by the critical reception it is currently getting, and are you a Green Lantern fan such as myself?

That's not good. That percentage doesn't mean how good or bad the movie is, just what percentage rated it favorably. I have plans to see this movie this weekend. Uh-oh.

Wait until it hits theaters. The "% liked it" is really the only thing you can trust. Sometimes people like crap but it's more reliable than the "% of critics liked it" because audience members generally aren't prone to pretension and elitism.

I still want to see it, but if the reviews are really bad then I'll just wait until it's on netflix.

Not really surprised with the previews I saw on TV.

I had pretty much no interest in this movie until the last couple of trailers. I might still give this one a shot if my friend wants to go.

That's promising :P I still plan to see it though. I'm not hard to please.

I say the trailer when watching xmen and it did look pretty bad, nice effects though.

UPDATE: It now has 30 reviews, with still only 6 positive, bringing it down to a 20%. Still not helping its cause...

The trailers didn't look that great, but this is pretty bad.

I don't really pay any attention to rotten tomatoes nor the scores of critics until after I've seen a movie in which I'll read the strongest postive and negative out of curiousity as to their points and reasonings...if any. That being said I'm not much of a DC fan and Ii've never followed Green Lantern so I didn't really have much of an interest in the film and the only chance I'll see it in a theatre is if a friend really wants to go see it for some reason and I tag along.

Not surprised, but i like the cast and i really like Green Lantern, so i'm going to watch it.

It doesn't look very good. I'm still waiting for Cowboys and Aliens, that's gonna be the best movie this summer!

I never have high hopes for these kind of films. The tomatoemeter is almost always reflective of my personal opinion except on one or two films, oddly enough. Hopefully that dosn't mean I'm biased by pretentious elitism, as another poster put :?

Was expecting that TBH.

It seems that beside Batman and Superman DC can't get a break when it comes to live action movies. Thankfully they do have their animated movies.

With Ryan Reynolds as the lead actor, how could it not be a **** movie?

Even though it's getting bad reviews, I'm going to check it out because I'm a fan of the books.

Anyone who's interested in the character should check out "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights", EXCELLENT animated movie if you want to be introduced to the character.

I guess it's up to Batman, again, to save DC in the live-action department. I'll probably enjoy GL more than more people because I read the books, but it sucks that it's getting bad reviews...

The more they make it look bad, the more I want to see it. :P

Damn, and I wanted it to be good...next up is Captain America.

DC can't have any good superhero movies without Batman or Superman in it.
