They have caused my faith in Christ to grow. They have also caused my belief in the Inspiration of Scripture to grow as well. As Henry Law wrote,

The Bible is the richest treasure of the world.

Without it the palace is a dark blank.

With it the humble cottage sparkles with celestial light.

It is the transcript of God's heart.

It tells, what human reason is weak to find.

It is pure truth without one shade of error.

It gives knowledge on all things
needful for time and for eternity.

It is a safe guide through life's entangled path.

It is a compass . . .
through shoals and rocks;
amid winds and waves;
to heaven's eternal rest.

The sage is ignorant without it.

The peasant learns from it salvation's road.

It is a solace for every hour.

It is a companion always ready to converse.

It cheers when other comforts fail.

It is arrayed in every charm for intellect.

It never wearies.

It is always fresh.

Its oldest truths cannot grow old.

Its readers become more wise; more holy.

Other books may puzzle and corrupt.
The
Bible
is from heaven, and leads to heaven.
It enters the heart with purifying grace.

The more you search the Bible, the more your
minds will wonder, and your hearts will love.

Read it as literally true. Then no human
philosophy will beguile you.

Ponder its characters. You will find on
them the intrinsic stamp of truth.

Thats basically the principle of driving your belief system to its uttermost extreme form in order not to allow yourself to be influenced by anything... ignoring the possibility that you are headed the wrong way...

In other words.....

"I close my eyes and sing LALALALALALALA"

Mostly I learned that I'm not very good at participating in such debates, and also that people can have really different trains of logic that can take them from the same premises to entirely different conclusions, which I find very weird.

If anything, this board has made my beliefs more dogmatic. I've gotten to the point where I can recognize the tune of a theist simply by the first few notes, and I have no interest listening to the rest. Furthermore, my opinion of theists tend to be lower than other people, but I guess that's fair, because I think the same about liberals, conspiracy theorists, creationists, murderers, thieves, liars, adulterers, and homosexuals, on different levels each (I don't want to associate a conspiracy theorist with a murderer, because they're both wrong to different degrees). Well, I guess most people, including myself, fall somewhere in or near those categories, so I gather I should be a bit more tolerant of their opinions at least, but not necessarily their lifestyles.

Why the hell do you think less of liberals and homosexuals? :?

No, religious threads become so petty I avoid them. I'd rather read a thread arguing which terrible death/black/made-up-tedious-genre-of-rock metal band is better.

Posting in these forums actually strengthened my beliefs instead of change my perspective. I can now back up my beliefs on philosophy with more logic. Just have to skim through the flaming and circular reasoning to find some good stuff on these forums.

Not really. I was raised Christian and will probably always be a Christian.

What internet debates have done for me is become very, very skeptical of Christian leaders' actions & agendas. It seems to me that most Christian leaders are far more concerned with pushinga political ideology rather than Christ's message.

And also as a result of internet debates (and political pundits); I now disdain the anti-science / anti-evolution / pro-ID part of the Christain community.

Agreed. Unfortunately it seems like the anti-science/anti-evolution Christians are the most vocal and thus get the most attention. I also think Christianity has strayed from it's roots in some regards. Personally, while I identify myself as Christian, I'm pro-evolution, pro-science, and pro-choice.

Same here on all acounts. :)

I'm glad to see Christian "leaders", like Dobson, Pat Robertson, T. Perkins, and Falwwell (even before he died), losing their influence on voters. Christ wouldn't be member of either political party.

Very true. Apparently some people don't realize that "thou shall not kill" doesn't apply to just Americans.

IMO, some religious threads aren't actual discussion and are only meant to argue and/or convert. But as long as people are polite and stay respectful, some really good conversations can take place.

Just made me a bit sad to see how many people seem to have learned most of what they know from TV or movies.

Not to be too personal, and you don't have to answer, but what beliefs have they reaffirmed?

I am an atheist.

It's all of us!!! But I agree with spazzx, they've just reaffirmed my beliefs, or non-beliefs as an Atheist.

From reading over the posts, it seems like people are actually more turned off to Christianity by those threads then they are converted. Interesting, but expected. On a side note btaylor, I can't wait for the new season of Dexter to start, I just wish the season was longer.

They've more than often confirmed my belief that a lot of people confuse atheism with intelligence, and a lot of people make assumptions on either side. It's like watching a kettle and a pot physically fighting before my eyes...

It made me actually organize my religious beliefs, instead of believing 50 things at the same time. So now I believe:
that evolution is pretty much a fact.
God created everything.
God loves everyone, including the gays and athiests, and that they get into heaven.
People who believe that their religious beliefs (Or lack thereof) are completely true are equally bad in my book.
Fundamentalist Christians don't even follow the Bible in many instances.

This forum has not really swayed or reaffirmed my belief in God, but it has shown me how many people have the wrong idea of Christianity. Every time I enter an argument with an atheist or agnostic here, at least some of them always just assume that because I'm a christian I am an elitist judgmental lunatic. And most atheists and agnostics seem to assume that my religion is about being judgmental and about giving people a bunch of random rules they must follow. They also see the hateful/degrading/supposedly contradicting parts in the bible without looking at the context and especially without looking at the overall message of the bible (fundamentalist Christians make this same mistake). At my church nothing could be farther from the truth, we understand God's biggest message was to accept his love, and love the world in turn. Our biggest concerns these days are issues of social justice, and we could care less if believe in creation or evolution, or if you got an infant or adult baptism, or whether your conservative or liberal. But these forums have shown me that the religion of my church and denomination are not what most atheists and agnostics see as christian religion. So either non-theists are blind to how the church is changing, or the church as a whole hasn't changed enough yet. That is what I have learned.

I believe SOME of the bible, but not all of it. I believe in god and jesus. I am christian. No, this has not changed my beliefs whatsoever.
