Has anyone grown an appreciation for art? (mainly paintings in the 20th century)

This is something I laughed at in high school and earlier.. I took a few classes on it college.. and it really opened my eyes and feel inspirired.. It comes across to me totally different now.. Ones you understand how it's tied to history... what it meant for them as an artist.. ect.. I don't know.. Is this part of getting older or what? I may not like all of it.. but I respect it now.. and feel like an idiot how I use to act towards these artistic people.

You do realize that materialism was partly responsible for a lot of that art, right? Lots of these guys were only able to do their art because they were already reasonably well-off, and some of the big names (like ninja turtle names) were doing work-for-hire by some of the wealthiest and most powerful people around.

For hire to sustain themselves, not to buy minuscule things. They were also hired by the church a lot of the time; I really doubt someone in that time period could refuse any impede commands by the church.

Its not like humans have evolved over the course of 500 years. People back then were subject to the same selfishness and petty vices that we are today.

Nope, ever since my friend told me that in an art class they saw a piece of "art" that was a urinal with someone's name on it, I think art is total bullshit.

How can you hate art? It plays a role in every day life. It's in the music you listen to, the sites you visit. It's even in your avatar and signature.

love art. We go to the Getty at least a few times a year, place is huge, has four massive towers full of sculptures, engravings and paintings. Has a really nice courtyard too, that's a bit like the courtyard on the Citadel , for you Mass Effect fans. Lots of fountains and such. Plus in summer they have outdoor bands playing in the evenings. They also change exhibits every month or so.

Yeah, sort of after taking an art appreciation course this year. But more so pre-20th century art. I don't think I'll ever be able to truly appreciate this:

Of course, but I have a BFA. I wrote a thesis on the aesthetic replication traditional Japanese print making using digital technology.

Duchamp was trying to make the statement that when you remove function from an object that only purpose is utilitarian, then it becomes an object of pure subjectivity. All the terms that define what a urinal is and does become irrelevant. It takes on a new meaning where form, and aesthetics dominate the conversation.

OOORRRRRR he could have jsut slapped a name on the urinal, knowing that people would read far too much into it.

And at the other user, I know a lot of art isn't like that. But when art can be considered by many to be something like the urinal, while other peoples' art is considered trash, kinda really doesn't make me like it too much. I'm probably jaded because my art teacher in high school always gave me low grades but that's just how things are.

Possible that Duchamp was just messing with everyone, but if you studied his work in detail you would know his goal was to redefine the meaning of common, ready made objects.

What I know of that piece is that he submitted it an exhibition that was supposed to be democratic and censorship free, but they rejected it, so it was sort of a slap in the face to art critics at the time. This piece only rivals Duchamp's other masterpiece:

A urinal and snow shovel, so deep and artistic. Why don't I pee in a teapot and put my name on it. I can B.S. that it's suppose to represent the hidden violent urges of western societies or some crap like that.

Art...ah I took a course at university. I like much of the art until the modern era. Just not a fan and no I don't respect blobs of paint etc that is prevalent. But earlier art is fantastic. For the most.

I like classic type art artists able to paint human figures and such and tells a story. Abstract art is really boring and I find it insulting to call it art when anyone could do the same thing.

It's actually not that uncommon for artists to become more abstract as their careers progress. Doesn't mean that they can't paint a realistic looking dude, just that their styles change and they find abstraction to be more interesting. It's not really surprising. A lot of artists start off learning "proper technique". Once they've got that down, once they have the skill required to make a person look like a person, they start to ask themselves, "why should this even need to look like a person?" Of course, that certainly doesn't mean you should like it. I'm just pointing out that many people have this notion of "this painting looks like a mess. The dude must have just done this because he doesn't know how to paint." And for many artists that isn't true at all.

This is a good point, take Picasso for example. He was considered an artistic prodigy at a young age and was fully capable of rendering very realistic drawings/paintings of people at a very early age. But he instead decided to explore cubism and 4 dimensional representation in painting.

I like how Piet Mondriaan's work got more and more abstract over time.
He stripped all bells and whistles until the core was left.

Do I think it's beautiful? Not really no...
But it was - especially for that time - revolutionary and it inspired other fields of play like architecture and industrial design.
So his work is incredibly valuable in the grander scheme of things.

Look at how his work progressed over the years.

Modern plastic art hasn't been able to amaze me. I have seen some expositions and they have not been really good. As for literature, there have been some new authors I´ve been very fond of.

I grew an appreciation for art after seeing some sycra videos on youtube. I really like the way some people can get perspective so correctly in their head.

I also noticed a lot of female artists mess this up, but they then replace it with style and I like that a lot too lol.
