Has religion benefited this planet in anyway? And if it has, are the Pro's greater than the cons ?

I mean religion has given us:

Beheadings

still-from-the-vidoe-of-the-beheading-of

Stonings

Child Abuse

catholic-clergy-pedophile-mafia.jpg

Mass suicide

Beating your wife, and making women 3rd class citizens, with similiar rights to a donkey

MEMRI-1594wmv.jpg

Eating cow manure for Good luck (hinduism) and drinking cow urine to cure ilnesses (Islam)

austerities2.jpg

Camel-urine-islam-muhammad.jpg

Some religious people do consider all these stuff as good things, but I sure dont

Inspired a lot of people to actually do good things. However, they are canceled out by the negative done in the name of those same religions. It would be nice if people could make informed decisions about life on their own without resorting to complicated steps to asking their subconscious the answer.

Well, why don't you go do something useful for humanity, like curing cancer or something, instead of talking how useless religion is.

in the grand scheme of things, relative to everything else, all things accounted for, etc.

no, religion has not been a benefit to human kind or the world. I imagine in a religion-free world, cancer would be cured by now, we'd be terraforming Mars, and there'd be a lot less problems.

I mean, hell, the absence of religious persecution alone would justify getting rid of religion.

Indeed, it could even make it worse. Indoctrination creates what are essentially automatons that parrot what their religious authorities tell them to say in response to criticism. And those who adhere to literal interpretations of religions tend to be incredibly defensive of their beliefs, which can include violence. All we really can do is let time work it's magic and we will eventually have a largely secular, non-religious world (personal spiritualism will likely increase, but will become more privately oriented). The religions are already largely contradictory, and with better education, people will begin to see these for themselves. A shame that education is of such low standards in the United States. I wouldn't doubt it is correlated to it's increased religiosity compared to other first-world nations.

Cancer while not cured has been has been fought hard and could be close to being cured. And it is not religion that is curing it, in fact many researchers believe stem cells are the future to cure cancer which is something that doesn't get funding because of mostly...well you can guess why.

Im not denying any of this.

Im also not a psychologist, but you're also forgetting spiritual health.

Anyways, if religion was created it was because man needed it, there is no denying that religion had no benefits whatsoever on humans at some point in history.

It's a placeholder. Humans will worship whatever they don't understand. As we come to understand more and more religion becomes more and more irrelevant. So is it a positive to give things order and people a false understanding of what they are meant to do, or is it a negative, a barrier to finding true understanding?

He doesn't believe in a God. So he isn't a theist.
