religion=bad.

your just making excuses

No. You are once again totally wrong. People have the capacity to be evil. But your insecurity does show.

Nothing sounds more biased than saying religion is either completely benefitless or its completely good.

We've got some pretty nifty versions of the bible out there that are pieces of art. I'm not a christian or anything, but they are beautiful. There are many places of worship that adorns European cities that stun me because of their beauty. We wouldn't have had incan, mayan or similar ancient ruins if not for their religion and their lifestyle.

What a stupid thread. Religion is one of (might be the most) important aspects in the history of humans. It has influenced human progress and morals in countless ways, to deny this means you would need to take a history course.

Yes there were some bad things commited by it, but bad things have happened without any religion involved. WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War etc....none of these conflicts had anything to do with religion. There was also mass murders against religious people commited under the Soviet Union.

Look at people like Martin Luther King Jr. He was a religious person whose faith gave him strength and inspiration. But this being Off Topic I don't expect many intelligent answers to come out of this thread.

Also if you have no God or religion than there is no such thing as "bad" or "evil" to you.

Seriously? Hitler was not a Christian or whatever he claimed to be. If he was a real Christian, he never would have killed anybody

Religion has inspired many things in society, perhaps almost everything, from my perspective. All sorts of arts, sciences, and lifestyles have benefited from religion. Even athiests have been ispired by religion. I'll never understand why people choose to attack it so much.

Yes, Some of the greatest structures, pieces of art and even stories have been influenced by religion. However Religion is a double edged sword and thus some of the bloodiest and cruel wars have been based on it as well.

'Religion' (as broad and vague as that is) has prompted advances in art, architecture, literature, education, philosophy, and a thousand other fields. It was probably also a great boon to pre-modern society-building/organisation, the development of language skills, the development of 'culture' more broadly...one can't even begin to monitor its impact on the development of our species. Whether you believe in it or not, and whether or not you think that the 'net gain' has been worth it, you'd have to be blindly zealous to pretend that religion (in one form or another) hasn't been a huge driving force in human history, and bearing with it many significant benefits.

Religion was one of the basic foundations of human society. I would say it was pretty damn important.

As a way that helped us construct and shape early society I would say undoubtedly yes. However its something that I think human society is relying less and less on due to scientific knowledge and critical thinking. I'd say its something we're slowing weaning ourselves off of for the better.

Religion was most certainly a contributing factor to the growth of civilization in it's early stages, but saying it's the most important one? Not even close... that would be agriculture. And dear gourd, SM is on a roll in this thread of inane, ridiculous, nonsensical garbage. He really seems like the perfect example of a teenager trying to be a pseudo-intellectual.

It's an expression of culture. I find it interesting to see how man has tried to explain the unknown and such. I look at it almost as a form of art.

Killing people is not exclusive of religion. People are killed over resources, greed, lust, etc. I dont like a lot of the ignorance that comes from religous fanaticism, but I dont view it as an all or nothing concept. There are things I like and things I dont. Mankind is a violent beast and will find reasons other than religion to committ acts of inhumanity.

Religion has it's good things and it's bad things. It's not an all or nothing thing. In my opinion the posters who are using incidents like pedophile priests, the WBC, or the Taliban as proof all religion is horrible are hypocrites. They're no better than the politicians who say all video games are bad because of people like the Columbine shooters and the guys who were going on a crime spree copying GTA.

Scientific endeavor, human dignity and the transcendence of man from the state of incipidness would not have feasible were it not for Christianity in the west and Hinduism in the east. You can thank the latter Greek philosophers for the eradication of scientific endeavor in Europe.

With fervour would I advocate the demanding policy ofthe Catholic Church over th enihilistic-relativist depravity you refer to as morality.

Religion has proved effective as a method of coping with the world's problems. It's also symptomatic of the world's problems. Religion has provided wonderful art and music and it has contributed to science a great deal. Unfortunately, religion has also censored art and music and suppressed scientific study in some instances.

He has point, many people have died because of religion, however many people have also been saved because of religion. Given the aid work in africa etc it may be the case that religion has helped more people then is has hurt. Overall I see it as a bad influence though.

Scratch that, I like this answer more:

People who say no are in denial. Even if you believe all religion is completely false, you can't negate the effect it can do on history and the everyday people who treat their religion humbly. The millinos of people who aren't beheading, killing, doing mass suicide and being pheophiles etc. This argument is completely one-sided. Yes, people can be ignorant about their own religion but those people are humble of their religion and aren't guided by the extremist and the propoganda the some religious groups produce. The Catholic church I used to go to donates over 200 turkeys every Thanksgiving. Those people they helped aren't suddenly canceled out because flawed history of religion.

To say the flaws of religion outweighs the good is debatable. To say that religion has done any good to the is world is ridiculous.

The problem with religion is that its all to human.

We should look out for each other because we are the same species, not because some abstract god tells us to but because we want to survive.

I was convinced this was either a troll thread, or someone asking a serious question.

Now I am certain OP is just a moron and you guys should stop giving him/her/it attention. This whole thread is making us all dumber.

"Religion" how do you define it. I define it as obeying God and all the other stuff are crap.
