I understand why a lot of liberals would hate Sarah when she was a threat to Obama, but now that the two are working together and she is far away in Alaska, does anyone want to admit that she is a likeable person after all? Even if you disagree with her politics, you have to admit she's a refreshing change from your typical politician. I hope she's the new face of the Conservative movement, what do you think now that the election is over? mysterylobsterWho cares about her? I dont like anything about the woman
Nope, did not like her then,do not like her now. the only thing I liked were her looks, but while i was not in favor of mcain anyways, choosing her sealed it for me,and i felt it was the worst decision he has made since he entered the national spotlight.
My theory on why John McCain picked Sarah Palin is an interesting one. How many of you have seen Men In Black? Jay picked Kay to train him, and eventually be his replacement. John McCain is getting up there in years, and Sarah Palin is young, is a strong minded Republican and all she needed was to be launched into the national scene. So when she became the Republican Vice-Presidential pick, that was her chance to say hello to the nation.Naw. I think McCain wanted Lieberman, but the party would never allow it. McCain in response chose someone off the list of suggestions out of frustration or spite, and it backfired on him.
So, I do hope that somewhere down the line she becomes the head of the Republican Party. Just not yet. She reminds me of a rookie in a major sport. She has potential, but needs to learn how to transition from the minor leagues to the big leagues. :Dremmbermytitans
[QUOTE="mysterylobster"]I hope she's the new face of the Conservative movement nocoolnamejimSo do I actually.
Same here. :) IMO, she is one reason why McCain lost so badly. Palin was able to rally her base, but did nothing for independents & minorities.
On Topic: I've always found Palin to be likable. She was a great attack dog for McCain. But (judging by all the pro-Palin emails I received before the election) she was only chosen because of her looks. And her politics did nothing for me as she was a fierce partisan.
I would've voted for McCain had he chose Lieberman.

Here is where your analogy fails:
In MIB, Tommy Lee Jones had to choose someone good at fighting, who was also really bad*** (it is a movie, after all): hence, Will Smith, who was both.
As for McCain and Palin, Mcain had to pick someone who is young, enthusiastic, smart, articulate, and moderate. He certainly hit the jackpot on the first two, but failed epically on the latter three, which are more important.

McCain is probably one of the most liberal Republicans in the senate. I doubt he would pick Palin of all people to be his heir apparent.

She seemed kinda stupid. Looking back on it now, though, she seems kinda stupid.SpidersRMe:lol: my thoughts as well.
[QUOTE="cell_dweller"]I still think her IQ is lower than my dog's...mysterylobsterHow do explain her success?
She was likeable (I didn't like her, but apparently a lot of people did). She had a type of populist appeal (nothing on Mr. Populist, by which I mean Joe Biden, but she still had some). For some reason, that gets votes:|

IMO, the best thing Palin can do right now is stay OUT of spotlight for a year (or three) and work on her resume by governing Alaska. Study up on issues too.
Palin attacking the media and talking to right-wing talk show hosts only rallies the Repub base. It does nothing for moderates, independents or minorities.
In response to the post by remembermytitans, I always felt Mcain picked Palin thinking he would pick up the women voters who wanted hillary just because she was a women and were upset Obama got the nod. Obviously it backfired, she was an empty head and more scary to womens rights then most conservative men,and tried to sell it off like it was okay because she was a women.
Women did not buy it.

A lot of Americans can relate to her. She's a mom... and that's about it, really. Some people also think she's hot. I don't see it, but whatever. She was likeable (I didn't like her, but apparently a lot of people did). My opinion of her is even less favorable now than it was before the election. Ever since the election, it seems like all she's done is whined and complained about how mean the media is/was to her.JML897
heh.....It's like I said earlier; The best thing Palin can do right now is stay OUT of the spotlight and concentrate on governing Alaska.
Everything she's doing now (attacking the media & talking to neo-con talk show hosts) only rallies the Repub base and no one else.

A lot of people have those qualities. Few, however, climb as high as Sarah. You just know she's smart like a fox. You could tell when she completely destroyed Biden in their debate.only rallies the Repub base and no one else.LosDaddieI don't even buy that. It might get some specific groups in the party excited but I know plenty of republicans who were not pleased with her. "Rallying the base" has become this phrase that seems to justify any canidate's actions without recognizing that more and more Americans are not affiliated with a party. I heard a lot about Pailin doing a good job rallying the base during the election, how much base rallying could have done when they lost traditionally Republican states...? If you've really rallied the base then you should at least be holding your home turf.

If you've really rallied the base then you should at least be holding your home turf. There's a reason why I posted early on in this thread my very sincere hope that Sarah Palin does indeed become the face of the conservative movement. I do not think she appeals to anyone outside of a fairly narrow group of people. Polls showed her popularity went straight down from her peak when she was first added to the ticket to the election. She got less and less popular the more people got to know her. Obviously, Palin would appeal to extreme conservatives since she accurately reflects her views. That does not, however, make her nationally electable. Her views are very popular in deep red Alaska and completely outside the mainstream of pretty much all the battleground states.

:| Palin gave the McCain campaign a huge boost when she was picked. I'm currently reading Newsweek's issue solely on the campaign/election and Palin caused MccCain's rally audiences to swell to Obama-like numbers. That's "rallying the base" to me.
And I think you misunderstood me. Palin certainly rallied the core / diehard Repub base. The same base that would vote for Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Beck, etc in a heartbeat.
I wasn't referring to moderate Repubs

Everyone gets a convention bump. Short of picking a rock you'll get a convention bump in the pols. That doesn't mean whomever is picked there has given them a bump because of who they are. If anything the appeal of a candidate is demonstrated over time, and Pailin's appeal declined greatly. You can call it what you want, rallying the core or base, but I'd say you're rallying squat if you're not getting enough people excited to hold your home turf.
