I think the woman is an idiot TBH and I think she really killed Mccains campaign.

That women really shouldn't have any power whatsoever and if the Republican party is smart they will abandon her.

I never hated her, I simply didn't think she should be in Federal politics. My opinion hasn't changed.

[QUOTE="LosDaddie"]

[QUOTE="duxup"] I don't even buy that. It might get some specific groups in the party excited but I know plenty of republicans who were not pleased with her. "Rallying the base" has become this phrase that seems to justify any canidate's actions without recognizing that more and more Americans are not affiliated with a party. I heard a lot about Pailin doing a good job rallying the base during the election, how much base rallying could have done when they lost traditionally Republican states...? If you've really rallied the base then you should at least be holding your home turf.duxup

:| Palin gave the McCain campaign a huge boost when she was picked. I'm currently reading Newsweek's issue solely on the campaign/election and Palin caused MccCain's rally audiences to swell to Obama-like numbers. That's "rallying the base" to me.

And I think you misunderstood me. Palin certainly rallied the core / diehard Repub base. The same base that would vote for Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Beck, etc in a heartbeat.

I wasn't referring to moderate Repubs

Everyone gets a convention bump. Short of picking a rock you'll get a convention bump in the pols. That doesn't mean whomever is picked there has given them a bump because of who they are. If anything the appeal of a candidate is demonstrated over time, and Pailin's appeal declined greatly.

You can call it what you want, rallying the core or base, but I'd say you're rallying squat if you're not getting enough people excited to hold your home turf.

All I know is that the core/diehard Repubs weren't excited about McCain until he picked Palin.

And I'm not sure what you mean by "home turf". If McCain had held every state GWB won, then he'd be Prez.

Not really, no. I was pretty happy she was picked as the VP, I hope she's the GOP candidate in 2012.

[QUOTE="mysterylobster"] How do explain her success? mysterylobster

She was likeable (I didn't like her, but apparently a lot of people did). She had a type of populist appeal (nothing on Mr. Populist, by which I mean Joe Biden, but she still had some). For some reason, that gets votes:|

A lot of people have those qualities. Few, however, climb as high as Sarah. You just know she's smart like a fox. You could tell when she completely destroyed Biden in their debate.

Were we watching different debates? I was under the impression that Biden destroyed Palin..

Who? I honestly could care less about Sarah Palin right now. There are more important matters than caring about her faux-populism.

Not really. I still think she was a bad choice. But Biden was also a bad choice. I hope he never gets a chance in the white house. That would be scary.

Most liberals I talked to were surprised that she at least held her own against him. And to think, she had no part in national politics just weeks before. She had to absorb all that information and be able to think on her feet. If that's not a sign of intelligence, I don't know what is. Sarah is clearly one of the brightest politicians in America. I'm proud that we share the same party.

You are certainly in the vast minority in thinking that. Also, if holding your own = victory, then that certainly is not someone that needs to be in a position of power in this country.

Oh, I think she clearly won in a convincing fashion. I was just talking about what I heard from some liberals.

Sarah has excelled at her job of running an entire state. That takes some serious brains.

I understand why a lot of liberals would hate Sarah when she was a threat to Obama, but now that the two are working together and she is far away in Alaska, does anyone want to admit that she is a likeable person after all? Even if you disagree with her politics, you have to admit she's a refreshing change from your typical politician. I hope she's the new face of the Conservative movement, what do you think now that the election is over? mysterylobster

Heck yes she was a threat. The media knew this the minute she ended her speech at the convention. That's why they went on the attack.

I do think that the press made an effort to portray her as a complete, mindless idiot. Saturday night live certainly did. I highly doubt she was stupid. Some people just aren't good public speakers and that can give the impression that you aren't intelligent. Likewise some people are articulate but not necessarily smart. However, I do think that Palin was underqualified for that post. She may be a candidate in the future, but I believe she needs more experience before seriously considering the top post in the country.

The media convinced the public before the debate that Palin is a moron. That's why so many people said she did better than expected.

I'll bet many of you have a hard time admitting any right wing Christian is intelligent.

I respect Palin's fortitude...at least it seems that way to me. She took an enormous beating from the media and yet kept going with her head up. She didn't really show that it phased her. Imagine if the media were constantly bombarding the public with messages declaring that one of us were an idiot...what if the media got personal and attacked our family members? That would be really tough to go through.

No, it frightens me that she appears to be setting herself up for viability in 2012. The GNP needs to go back towards more traditional conservatism. This Neocon garbage is a sick abomination of everything conservative. If she is really the only hope for the GNP, they are in huge trouble.

Or people might think she is stupid because she can't name a Supreme court case besides Roe v. Wade and when asked which specific newspapers does she read she responds by saying "All of 'em" without naming a single one.

[QUOTE="chessmaster1989"][QUOTE="mysterylobster"] A lot of people have those qualities. Few, however, climb as high as Sarah. You just know she's smart like a fox. You could tell when she completely destroyed Biden in their debate. mysterylobster

Were we watching different debates? I was under the impression that Biden destroyed Palin..

No, she is not. Her "arguments" were no more than a string of campaign lines and slogans; the most blatant example is when she stated, after pausing for a moment to gather her thoughts, that "Obama [was] waving the white flag of surrender."

If that's intellect, I would hate to see what you call stupidity.

Compared to Joe Biden, she looked like an amateur.
