I'm 37 and the internet has changed the world the most dramatically in my lifetime. I had a modem before the internet was really accessible, then the internet meant email and only geeks had email addresses. Then within a very short time everyone has email addresses and everyone is on the internet.
well the easy answer is it works with telephone lines. That and it's magic.
EDIT: A lot of people don't realise the world wide web was like an addon to the internet, that at first was considered a bit gimmicky and not really worth it as speeds were so slow that having pictures on web pages wasn't worth it. Before that we had news groups - just like forums really.
I believe ex-Senator Ted Stephens said it best...viewtiful26
Yours is only the second response to reference that. OT failed this one.
EDIT: Okay, third, but still.

Wow, I was stunned to hear that perfect explanation of what the Internet is. Bravo Ted Stephens for making us more knowledgeable about the Internet.

Oddly enough, that isn't actually that bad a metaphor, at least to illustrate concepts like bandwidth and such like, although his saying that he "got an internet delivered" makes it rather likely that he had no idea he was giving a remotely accurate description. :P
Its a tiny black box kept in the tower of london. (The IT crowd is a UK comedy. It is a reference to that.)impl0sionyes. we know. but i have wondered how the web works, still havnt bothered to find out though
I think the same way about stuff. Like, how the hell does wifi work? How is tons of videos, images, and games get transfered through the air? I mean, what the ****, how could anyone be that smart to figure that stuff out?DooDooPeePeeagreed, i often wonder how the hell that works. i guess all you really need is some kind of wave through the air that means either 1 or 0 to the computer and you can interpret it from there....OMG I DID IT. hahaha

Well, I don't even use this website for game purposes.
Maybe he can't be bothered to write in full English because we can still read it anyway. ;)

What a waste of perfectly good 5% that could be used for pornography.

No, it's all porn, it's just that 3% is video game themed and 2% is "other" themed. I would stay away from the "other".Please Log In to post.
