It's one of those things that seems very reasonable to understand, but inventing/perfecting it was a huge accomplishment.

It's the TCP/IP protocols that make it all work.

Basic protocols define rules that allow any two directly-connected devices use to communicate in an orderly fashion. Higher level protocols allow indirectly-connected devices to establish "virtual connections", which are implemented by sequences of direct connections.
