Wow yesterday my thread got only 50 post nowit burst up to over 200. That was not expected.

I understand having moderators in forums that are supposed to stay on a specific topic. I don't see the point of having moderators in an Off-Topic Forum. Should be "everything goes" with a content advisory in the description. What's the worst thing that could happen? We swear at each other? Post some pictures of somebody's privates?

Because there are 13-year-olds here, and the forums aren't age-gated.
This is the OT. There are things posted here daily that I find just as offensive for a minor as any profanity or vulgar photo.

I didn't call anybody an idiot who didn't deserve it. Meaning--I'm sure I was just responding in turn. I rarely start fights, and I rarely throw an insult that wasn't in response to another one. I can be a little mean at times, but there's no way that should be an infraction in itself. I don't know how deeply the Moderators look into each potential infraction and the circumstances surrounding them, but to me that's more important than sticking to the letter of the law and trying to make an example of somebody.

As the old cliche goes, two wrongs don't make a right. No offense intended - but it's really not your call to decide whether people deserve to be called idiots or not. If you rarely throw insultsand start fights, that's good. But every time you do it you risk being reported, and that sort of report will be moderated every single time, because it's plain as day. This isn't a letter of the law issue, because simply put, there is no excuse for calling another user or group of users idiots on this site. Ever.
So you don't think it's more important to get to the root of a problem than to make an example of someone who happens to be violating the letter of the law? That's what it sounds like you're saying. Beg my pardon, but if someone is directly insulting me, my beliefs, or refuting solid evidence that I've given to my point.. yeah, they should be responded to in force, by ME. I guess I'm just sick of seeing the same people day after day, week after week getting away with things while I get modded for standing up for myself.

If you're sick of them getting away with it, then report the people who make these comments and don't respond to them. You're anonymous on the internet - use that. Most moderations come about from reports, not from us scouring the forums for wrong-doing. As for making an example of a person, I'm not sure how we'd do that, given that moderation histories are private and deleted messages do not appear in threads. Who's going to see the example being made?
Finally, you are not just violating the letter of the law when you call people idiots. As I mentioned earlier, the spirit of the anti-flaming rules is to encourage friendly discussion. Under no circumstances will calling someone an idiot facilitate that goal. Retaliating just creates an endless cycle of flaming.

I rarely report other people because I think it's very petty unless they're just relentlessly harassing me. I do believe that users should be able to sort out the majority of their debates/arguments on their own.. even if it includes a few minor violations of the TOU. All I ask is this-- That when each Moderator gets whatever sort of notice you get when someone reports another user, that you take the time to go to the specific thread, find the start of the argument, see who is truly responsible, who threw the first "punch," and hand out punishment accordingly. Retaliation isn't "right" per se, but it's usually not the biggest evil in an argument that I'm involved in.
I know I'm idealistic, but I just want there to be more meaning attached to moderations/bans. As it stands they have felt very "empty" and pointless to me. As for the issue of "making an example" of someone by modding/banning them.. I can't argue with you on the point that nobody else can technically see the banning occur. However, the person who reported the infraction (in my case, usually the person who threw the first punch) knows that I will be modded as a result of their actions, and no doubt feels vindicated as a result. That's why I think it's so important to go back and look at the entire discussion before handing out punishment. Anybody can follow a hard and fast rulebook, but to interpret those rules correctly for each situation is the real challenge, as I'm sure you know.

Nope not going to happen around here. You're responsible for your actions. At no point will the moderation team take the stance "well he did kinda deserve it" if that is the way you want things, it's time to find another website to post at.
Find a troll? Report him and find another thread to have fun in. Shoot back at them in a trolling fashion? Guess what? Yup, you're gonna get moderated. End of story.
