It's the end of an era. Today Geocities officially goes to the ol' farm upstate. For those of you too young to ever have experienced the magic that was Geocities (or those of you old enough to have unfortunately experienced the magic that was Geocities), xkcd has redesigned their frontpage in its honour.

In Memoriam,

I always preferred Tripod because I could use FTP. But yeah it's sad to see a cornerstone of the web go like that.

By which I of course mean terrible.

Bio_Spark

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I have always hated that goddamn dancing baby. It is everything that is wrong with mainstream culture, especially mainstream late 90's culture.

Anyway...geocities. I remember when every webpage looked like a crappy geocities page (ie back when Netscape was still the most popular web broswer and AOL was actually decent). Kids these days have it too easy. Back when I was a kid we had to highlight all the text on a webpage just to read it because the moron who designed it thought it was a good idea to put black text on top of a starry night background, we had to suffer through horrific aesthetic deisgn, and dear lord the gifs...there's a reason I still rage when seeing a gif anywhere on the internet.

I'll miss you geocities, if only for the crappy nostalgia which flooded every page you hosted.

I feel bad for getting the internet in-home in 2002. I feel like I missed out on the party.

I never used Geocities. I used Angelfire. In fact, I still remember what that address is.

It's cool, thanks to the wonders of the modern intertubes you too can now experience what the internet was like back when sub-HD resolutions were the norm, 56k dial-up was considered fast, and all the tubes of the internet could fit in a single room:

The internet c1996

Old Gamespot

The White House (gov of course, not com which as we all know used to be a porn site)

note: I originally had apple, google, and yahoo linked as well but even GS refuses to look at them (ie the javascript running the posting function is being a killjoy again) so you'll have to go here to and type them in manually yourself, along with whatever else you fancy
