Here is an idea for Europeans:

I'm only a junior in High School, so I'm not that informed. But I have gotton a 5 on my European History Ap exam. Anyway, I was reading some article about the Basque people (northern Spain/southern France) fighting to secede and form an independent state. Is it just me, or is it true that Europe is more divided today than a 100 years ago? European Union? Yea right! There are more independent states today that ever before in Europe.

I realize that language has a lot to do with this problem. SO I want to ask some Europeans a question: do you guys think that, if you all adopt a modernized latin with your native language, a union of the European states will be possible? Because, as I have realized, you can't study history of one European state without studying them all. If you guys are so integrated, why are you so divided? Will latin, a common language to ancient Europe (Roman empire) help?

English works fine...And no, the European continent is not more divided now than it was 100 years ago. Yes there are more nations, but the nations back then was almost completely independant from eachother when it came to common foreign politics.

Europe may be more divided by borders before, but there is less conflict. Independence has created smaller, more stable countries. The United States is an example of a working system of states with independent laws. If the whole of the US had one set of laws, it just wouldn't work, and the same goes for the EU. Splitting up while having a governing body to enforce general regulations in all states/countries improves things and the European Union and the United States are working examples of this. The whole Basque thing is an example of what happens when people don't get independence.

You should go be the head of the EU. "I may only be a junior in high school but I got a five on my AP test!" would be great slogan.

On cjek's comment: its true that Europe could never be like the U.S., but I disagree that the U.S. needs different laws in different regions to survive. Laws are not significantly different from state to state (though the variation is certainly there)

Yea, the German states were divided up till 1870. And the Italian states up to 1860. I just can't shake the feeling that Europe will never find unity

Never find unity? How would you describe the European Union then? It indirectly controlls every member state....and a new treaty is about to be signed...for better or worse.
