Because some people like to be intolerant as they feel it makes them better than other people. It's the same reason that any other kind of discrimination exists too. Eventually people will become more tolerant, just as for example racism and sexism have died down a fair amount (of course the problems still exist, but these kinds of discrimination aren't accepted by society).
I think it also has to do with religion...It's not like Christianity is the only religion in the word. Christianity mostly killed other cultures... My dad said our ancestors used to believe in the moon, sun, water, etc. gods, but some missionary came and told them something else! They were forced to believe in it or they would throw them in jail... I don't think God wanted people to force them into his religion.

And christianity isn't the only religion to look down upon things like these. You'll find out many other cultures disapprove of this. I have no problem w/ gay marriage just as long as it is not of the church.
