Hi, all! You know, I wonder. Right now, the highest standard of high definition, if I'm correct, is 1080p. Do you think HD will advance further and we'll see something like 1320i and 1320p or something like that? Or, is it even possible for HD to get sharper than it already is?

4 or 5k resolution is next. They are already rolling into movie theaters and a bunch of new movies are being filmed with a new camera called the EPIC red which shoots in 5k

1600p has been available on PCs for years before the 'HD' buzz word was used. Also Eyefinity can give you much higher res and 4k is already getting installed in most movie theatres. There are experimental super HD resolutions too and old film projectors are even higher res.

but would it matter? I ask because I thought 1080P details pretty much everything, makes the image clear as if you are there. So what will 5k do,over exaggerate everything? Fill me in.

It already exists so there's no reason for it not to come to our TVs soon unless companies never give up on this 3D garbage.

Resolutions like 4K and 5K are needed for movie theaters because the image they are projecting is so large. You need all of those pixels to ensure a sharp picture. A resolution of 4K would make no difference on the TVs out now unless you were sitting VERY close. Even then, it would still be overkill. There has been no definite answer as to what resolution will be next for consumers, but I have seen 1440P a few places.

Of course it will happen soon. TV companies have been showing demos of 2160p televisions.

I wouldn't expect a major media shift in display resolutions very soon. (PC gaming excepted, obviously)

1440p (2560x1440) is probably going to be next for TVs.

3D was definitely a fluke. It is on its way to the coffin again. The sales numbers were far below the already meager expectations of sales analysts. Given that there is absolutely no push within digital media to produce content higher resolutions (especially as the quickly growing DD is hard enough to get right with HD at current bandwidth rates) and the fact that the average person still oogle over a well-done HDTV, I don't that resolution being pushed for TVs within the next decade. (and that's a bloody long time) The only thing I could see changing this is some sort of a revolutionary change in internet speeds.

1080p is more than twice as many pixels as 720p, yet to most isn't visibly different to the human eye until you get up into larger TV sizes of roughly 42"+ at normal viewing distances. So would there be a market for something higher than 1080p? Most likely. Would there be a market for a resolution of 4,000 or more in anything other than projectors? Probably not. For the screen sizes we have on the market now a resolution that high would not make any difference to the human eye.

I think Japan already has some 1440p TVs, they're always ahead of us in things like this. Of couse we have 1440p (and larger) monitors already.

Yeah, and technologies that don't take off in Japan generally don't make their way here. I was referring however, to TVs. I wouldn't be surprise if it became a relatively standard PC gaming resolution. (well, it already is)
