What are your feelings and thoughts on this sub-culture?
I personally believe that they are about the mostpretentious, insincere, ridiculous sub-culture in contemporary America. What about you?

There's a somewhat significant amount of people pretending to like certain activities, music, movies, art, etc. to seem cooler, but in general they're very easy to ignore.
They're no better or worse than their counterparts, the media sheep who follow orders on what to "like" from prolonged exposure to MTV, Fox News, the radio, Fashion mags, etc.
Wth are hipsters? :?Mr_Leonis
They are this group of 14-30 year olds of people that go completely out of their way to be as counterculture as possible. Theypurposelydress in the most ridiculouscloths, listen to music and watch movies that they know other people wouldn't watch. They are pretty much just a bunch of attention getters who need to feel different then others just so they can feel like they are better then everyone else.

Just a question...what if some of those "hipsters" DO enjoy some of those things because those things are good? What if their initial intention was to get away from the standard fare stuff and try something different, andthey found a wealth of things most people wouldn't watch simply due to lack of exposure/publicity/marketing and an abstract subject matter?
Yes, there are those who aim to be different for the sole goal of being different and setting themselves up on a pedestal. Yet, there are also those who are curious and expand their tastes farther than many attempt, and they shouldn't be tossed into the same crowd.
Just because most people wouldn't enjoy movies like Brazil or The Diving Bell & The Butterfly, or music like The Velvet underground or Animal Collective, doesn't mean they're just trying to be different for the sake of being different.
Not saying you're insinuating any of the above. Just shedding a little perspective

I agree with you completely, and I know some of those hipsters are as you described. I used to date a girl who took me to some hipster parties and just talking to these kids, and getting to know a few of them, it was so incredibly obvious that they were no different then those people whoembracepopular culture to its fullest, they just claimed they were for the sake of doing so, not because they actually like half that ****. Since then, I come across these people from time to time and with 95% of them there seems to be this hugeincongruency between they way they act and how they dress, and what they claim to be into. They always seem to be trying to get peoples attention in some way too.

You see, I enjoy those bands and films but I definitely wouldn't consider myself a "hipster". I don't listen music like that because it's different, it's because I enjoy it. That said, I listen to practically all genres of music and I like plenty of mainstream films.

Yeah, elitists can be jerks. I mean, where I live, I was tired to hearing Nickelback and Avril lavigne every other song on the radio, so I turned it off and ventured online to check out new music. 7 years and 600 CDs later I'm still not content with my library of music. I have yet to delve into a lot of Jazz, and 50s pop. I get called a hipster a lot, which annoys me, but I don't take it to heart. I know that jumping from Fallout Boy to Tom Waits is a terrible task. It's not like I cut out "mainstream" music either, I simply don't allow the radio stations or music television to stomp it into my ear all the time. I still listen to The Tragically Hip, Coheed & Cambria, Foo Fighters and whatnot. I watch movies like "Gerry" and "The City of Lost Children" but i don't turn away from "Batman" or the upcoming "Step Brothers". It's all keeping an open mind. Listen and watch what's enjoyable. Wear what you enjoy. If others label me as a fakester, then that's their prerogative, but it's obvious decided without getting to know me as a person.
I know people who praise the Beatles as the best band ever, but can't hum more than 2 of their tunes, and can't tell me the names of the band members aside from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. They just take people's words as fact without letting themselves make a choice, and that's the biggest problem with this generation. Too many people are scared to narrow down the influence of others, and let themselves think.
